Insurance in Michigan

I am thrilled to have purchased my first GMC motorhome.

... just got off the phone with Progressive, and it appears they don't have a listing for it, and couldn't figure out how to insure it.

Any ideas on where to purchase insurance in Michigan will be much appreciated.

It is a 1974 Canyonlands.

Lots of GMCers have Progressive. I do not because I refuse to do business with that company, but that is another story. Call them again. USAA
pushed most of their RV business over to Progressive. I have USAA and also State Farm on some of my vehicles.

If you have your heart set on Progressive, call a different agent. Some are more resourceful than others.

I use Amica on my vehicles although I'm in Massachusetts.
They had no problem with the GMC.

I got mine through the Wyandotte AAA office. My other cars were already insured there, but be sure to PM Nick. He knows more about insurance than I
do and may know of a better option for you.

Also, depending on your driving habits/plans. An authentic plate in Michigan, as opposed to an historical plate is the way to go.

Find a Michigan plate from 1974. Send the SOS 35 bucks, with the application and a print out photo of the plate and never pay a yearly registration
fee again as long as you own the coach. The only down side is if you camp at a state park you need to buy that sticker each year.

To qualify for an authentic license plate, the vehicle must be:

26 or more years old
Owned solely as a collector's item
A vehicle registered with a regular historic plate or authentic historic plate cannot be used for general transportation. The vehicle can only
used for participating in historical club activities, exhibitions, tours, parades, car shows, swap meets, and similar uses.

Progressive underwrites mine via USAA. I self - insure the value and buy liability only though, and it's quite cheap.

Glad you found your way here.
Welcome to the group, family, cult, asylum.

I am not at home, but I will communicate with you when I am.
Three things right up front:
1 - An Historic or Authentic plate is now real issue as there is a GMC event almost every day of the year and there is nothing in the rules that says
you have to go the short way.
2 - You may have to get an appraisal to get stated value insurance, but you have lucked out there too. Jim Kanomata will be and the fall rally in
Elkhart, and you should be there too.
3 - We have a regular GMC Lunch bunch at All American on third Saturdays. (Watch for it here.)

Next thing you should do here is create sigfile with your real name (so we know who you are when you meet other GMCers), a short bit about the coach,
(you did say Canyon Lands, but any serious mods should be noted) and you did include Taylor MI, but the email half of this bunch, so it is good to do
(this is also how Mike and Nick locked on so fast).

There is a sizable following on FaceBook, and reading there is not a bad idea, but be aware that there are many that write there with little or no
actual GMC experience. I have seen some dangerous answers. GMCs (TZE serial number) are very different beasts. You fortunately have the expertise
you need right here. There lots of other resources too. We will get you smart about all of that stuff in due time.

The standard advice given here is always the same. Don't do anything rash...
Get it safe, get it reliable and enjoy what it gets you before you do anything to it. All but a very few things were well designed and there are only
a very few real improvements to be made without great expense.

Now, you don't know about it yet, but you just acquired a whole bunch of brand new old friends. This is a community like few others. They are
supportive and helpful much more than you might expect. Be aware that we all have a personal agenda. That agenda is - quite plainly - to see that
you can enjoy your coach as much as we each enjoy our own. The only other community like this that I know of is that of the watermen that are my
world. because of that, I have taken to welcoming new owners much as a new owner or vessel is welcomed there. So,

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all those that set forth within her.

I ordered a 1973 set of plates with 1974 sticker yesterday. I expect that it will be here in a couple of days.

I still have until December left on the plates on my current RV which I sold today. So, I think I might as well pay the $5 transfer fee and finish out
those plates, because they have the state park pass sticker.

Sayurday, I hope to remove the GMC from the warehouse where it has been stored. The first place it's going is in my driveway to get everything sealed.
It has been stored indoors most of its life, and while I bought a cover for it, I will not be storing it indoors.

Next it will go immediately for 6 new tires. Before I take it anyplace else I will change all of the fluids, check brake hoses heater hoses, belts

I know that it has headers Flowmasters and a gorgeous three or three and a half inch exhaust all the way back; a Honda liquid cooled generator it is
either 6k or 6.5k; it has 16 inch wheels, a cold air intake modification, 3.55 differential, 4 bag suspension, and appears to have been well cared
for. Other than that, I do not know very much about it. It started right up and the engine was very smooth and quiet, the documentation and the
parents indicate that it has 37,000 actual miles. I will be the third owner.

I only live a couple of miles from the buffet where you eat, so I will definitely join you there.

Better check the date on the spare, Dan, it would be a real PITA if you
had to use the spare, and it went poof! before you got the damaged tire
repaired. Some folks are using 5 or 6 years for life expectancy, some
are using the Manufacturer's claim. I just had all 7 replaced. A few
years back, I had 3 tires start to shed tread rubber within 3 months. Two
were only a little over 5 years old, the other was 7. One of them took
out the tubing to the air bag on that side. Tires are supposed to be
getting better in recent years, but, who knows for sure?
Be sure to specify new tires not more than 6 month old, some tire shops
have inventory that's been around a while.

It sounds like you hit a winner. Now all you have to do is keep it that way.

You will probably hear mixed reviews of covers around here. Some say that they are better than colored socks but short of canned beer and other think
that they are really poor idea because they wear the paint (I wouldn't mind at all) and trap moisture inside. Me. I have a barn.

Now scribble all over your calendar about September 15 to 21 so you can get to the international rally at Elkhart (IN).

This cover is very "breathable."
