Hi all, we are looking at getting a GMC next month but, minor detail, we live in NYC. We had an option to park it at a friend’s company’s hangar but that just fell through. Any interesting or creative ideas? It can of course be further out (Manhattan is not all that conducive to GMC parking ;) ) as we have a car and are good driving an hour or two to get to it. Thanks for any advice!

Neighbor is a web site and app that lets you filter to find or offer vehicle storage, short or long term, covered, indoor, outside.

Some limiting factors are how far from NYC you're willing to go, how often you'd expect to need access, etc.

Good luck in your search!

Indoor RV storage near New York City is limited but available, primarily through secured self-storage facilities in outer boroughs or specialized facilities further upstate. Top options include Safeguard Self Storage (Hollis), StorQuest (Long Beach), and Extra Space Storage locations, which offer covered or indoor drive-up spaces to protect against harsh weather.
Indoor RV Storage Options Near NYC
  • Safeguard Self Storage - Hollis (Queens): Indoor storage and covered parking for various vehicle types.
  • StorQuest Self Storage - Long Beach: Offers covered RV storage with 24-hour surveillance.
  • Extra Space Storage (Various Locations): Offers garage-like indoor spaces, particularly suitable for smaller RVs, trailers, and campervans.
  • CubeSmart: Provides indoor vehicle storage options with 24-hour video recording to secure RVs.
  • Hudson Valley RV Storage (Chatham, NY): Located north of NYC, this facility offers private, heated, and secure indoor bays (16'x16'x50').
Key Considerations
  • Space Limitations: Indoor, enclosed spaces (often 10x16 to 10x23 or larger) are limited near the city center.
  • Security: Most facilities feature 24-hour surveillance and gated access.
  • Pricing: Options range from 12-month contracts for private bays to more flexible short-term leases.
For large motorhomes, specialized, higher-clearance indoor storage may require driving further into the Hudson Valley or New Jersey.

Thank you! Yes, that’s what I found too but wanted to check if there were any other considerations or creative ideas. We will look at all these options as I understand indoor storage is recommended. Or are breathable covers an option too? (If outdoor parking).

Covers are available but they're relatively expensive and the ones I've seen don't fit very well.

If a temporary canopy is allowed and if deep snow isn't a factor, I've found the King Canopy 18x27' works great. Costs about the same as a breathable cover, much easier to use. Needs to be correctly anchored to the ground.

A cover is a definite possibility, but climate controlled indoor storage would be ideal, at least in your area. You would have to thoroughly winterize the coach if you plan to store it outside, blowing all the water out of the lines and adding RV antifreeze etc. It could be stored outside without a cover too.

Where do you live in NYC?

Manhattan - Upper or Lower

Take Lincoln Tunnel to NJ Turnpike South. This usually took me between 40 to 75 minutes depending on traffic. I think that this fits your criteria.

If you are way north in Manhattan, you could also take the George Washington Bridge to the NJ Turnpike.

It makes a big difference of where you are starting from.

Where do you plan to travel to? If you plan to head south, look in New Jersey. Travel through Staten Island via the Verazzao or go through the Lincoln Tunnel I NJ Turnpike South (I-95) to the Woodbridge, NJ area.

Getting back & forth to the coach is only one thing.

Where do you want to drive the coach to?

Are you going to flat tow your car?

You don’t want to be stuck in traffic in the New York metro area in your coach.

In the Woodbridge, NJ area, the Garden State Parkway, The New Jersey Turnpike (I-95), I-287, US-9 & NJ-35 all intersect. It is a great place to move quickly anywhere.

Perth Amboy, NJ is only separated from NYS (Staten Island) by the narrow Arthur Kill.

You can head north on I-287 to get to the Thruway in Suffern, NY, totally avoiding NYC.

You can also take I-287 to I-80 in Parsippany, NJ to head west on I-80 or I-78 in Pluckemin, NJ (shorter).

I lived in Keyport, NJ for 25 years. It is Exit 117 on the Garden State Parkway.

It has access to NYC via Ferry (South Amboy) and NJ Transit Rail (many stations).

Are you looking for outdoor storage, indoor storage or an RV Park?

Do you want to drive to your Motorhome or are you willing to take a train or ferry?

If you are driving, parking your car can be an issue.

Do you want a place where you can plug your coach in?

Inside parking is an issue because most parking areas do not have 9ft to 10 ft overhead clearance.

I lived in north & central NJ for over 65 years and travelled a lot to NYC. Thank God the I have been in Florida for the last 20 years.

One of my sons lives in Manhattan, with my grandson, on 123rd St. He is a professor teaching computer at NYU (Brooklyn).

My wife grew up in upper Manhattan and graduated from Law School at Columbia. She was in the World Trade Center, working for NYSE, when it was first bombed. Luckily she was in Luxembourg visiting her mother when it was bombed on 7/11.

We have stories.

I know the drill.

You can call me @ (941) 807-7723 if you want to talk further but email me first to set a time. I don't pick up calls from unknown numbers.

Many of the storage sites around Palmetto, FL offer many types of event & boat storage. Some are outdoor parking spaces, some are outdoor covered parking space & some are garage indoor. Some have electrical power but most do not.
As opposed to RV Parks, these places are fenced & gated, many with very good security.
I just moved my office records to Public Storage in Palmetto. There are at least 100 RVs & Boats there.
There are large air conditioned garages there with 40 foot diesel pushers inside. When you paid $1,000,000 for a Tiffany paying $3,500/month is no big deal.

That’s just not us.

It all depends on what your budget is, how you want to protect your coach & from what.
