Obviously, since AOL is still the worlds largest ISP(by a long shot -
13.5 million subscribers according to this morning's paper) they're
doing something right(mostly advertising IMO). They do provide an
introduction to the net with an "all-in-one" software package which
keeps things simple for novices. The interface is simple to use and
many people enjoy the proprietary "content". As long as you're a
"basic" net user, it works fine.

Where many people fall out with AOL is when they become a "high-volume"
net user. At one time I was subscribed to 18 email lists and 10 usenet
newsgroups. Managing this volume of information with the AOL mail and
news clients is all but impossible - I was handling around 300 emails
and 2,000 usenet posts a day. It would be impractical, if not
impossible, for me to admin a mailing list from AOL due to the
restrictions of their email client. My AOL-subscribed friends watch in
amazement as Netscape automatically sorts 100 incoming emails into 25
different folders(8 folders for GMC traffic alone).

As long as your needs are basic and you're comfortable with the simple
interface - no problem. When you're ready to stretch your 'net legs -
you'll need something else.

my $.02 - YMMV,
Patrick

I wonder how many AOL subscribers on free trial memberships are in those
numbers.

I my case if I subscribe for 6 moths at approx $22 and change, IBM will
rebate me $175 bucks! So why not?

But I still hate it and will probably go to the IBM.net when the time is
up

Remember a year ago or so, their CFO had to resign because they were
using some formular equating a percentage of those trial memberships as
assets and not just maybe's? Most folks noticed that they were very slow
on processing canelations but very fast on processing new trials. Many
of my friends were cancelling credit cards, just to get them to stop
billing the card. They are mass marketers and are after the same group
that can't program their VCRs and don't want to learn, either. They
serve a fairly large segment, and do it fairly well, when all is said and
done.

For extensive traveling GMCs it is probably a good solution.

Tom Peters, author of In Search Of Excellence might like this one. Service
is all they have to offer and if they do not do it in a mode of excellence
they will not survive in todays market. Chuck, 78 Eleganza, Lompoc, Ca.

Heard one from Tom and his mate, who wrote the book at a session a few years
back. Seems Tom was to speak to a group of Airline Executives.. and his time
to speak was 12noon. Well twelve noon came and went, and 12:05 then 12:10 and
finally 12:15. He smartly walked into the room and told the audience how
happy he was to be there, and on time. The crowd looked puzzled as he was 15
minutes late, when Tom let them have it. I know I am on time because to you
airline people 15 minutes late is on time. With that he went on with his
talk.

Quite a story.
