Greetings from Southern California -

I finally got around to the project of cleaning up 45 years of oil and grease from the generator compartment - along with some long-ago deteriorated
insulation. I plan to line the box with some contemporary heat blocking and sound absorbing material.

And... I finally removed the false raised floor in the rear area. I can use the new increased height to get taller things under the bed... And it
was fun to tell my helper about the origin of the raised floor.

But I sure was surprised to find a few strands of orange and brown shag carpeting stuck under two staples UNDER the raised floor. Could I have a
model that was finished and then refinished with the raised floor ?? TZE033V100270.

Curious...

Vern -

As I've heard the story - the wife of one of the executives associated with the GMC Motorhome was unhappy when her feet couldn't reach the floor while
sitting in the rear gaucho beds (two opposing sofas that slide together into a bed). The simplest solution was to raise the floor - and someone made
it so.

True ?? Quite likely. There's really no reason for it - it's completely empty underneath. At least mine was.

The story I got was that the floor was raised to allow access to the bunk
beds. Yes, they installed it right over the shag carpet.

Steve w & others,

My take; there WERE real reasons for the raised floor in the rear. The interiors in the 1973 & 74s were done by Gemini, a time in the 70s when
quality control was usually a misnomer. The rugs were usually installed before any modules and furniture was installed (we often find rug remnants
under modules after the rug has been replaced). That allows any of the floor plans to be installed without concern for fitting the rugs to a
particular floor plan.

There were a number of reasons for the raised floor, sufficient heights for the generator, the water tank, seating height standards and the inclined
floor at the very rear of the MH floor.

I removed my raised floor years ago as I didn't like the weight of all that lumber in the rear ;^(

While one of GMCs goals was to appeal to women (per House & Gardens input) I don't think this was one of them.

But there was not a factory raised floor in -73 was it, I thought that was later with the flex steel ? Btw no rised floor in the 3 1973s I had

I have a May 1978 26' Royale by Coachman, and it has the rear platform, as
well as the dinette floor. There is gawd-awful burnt orange shag carpet
under both. As well as the kitchen module. In pictures that I have seen, it
shows workers installing modules through the open rear of the coach, and
carpet from front to rear and side to side in the entire coach. I assume
that earlier coaches were similar. When I first got our coach, I stripped
out all the carpet in the cockpit area down to the floor, and it was a
miserable job removing all those staples. Hundreds of 'em.

Life is too short to hold a grudge; slash some tires and call it even !

Our raised floor was empty space. It's nice now to have a flat floor. Makes ceiling higher in bedroom which is good.
