Hydroboost issues?

On the Mopar (thats Chrysler Inc cars) list they are discussing the GMC
motorhome as one surfaced at an auction along with an Imperial. They claim
GMC got sued over the motorhomes "hydroboost" system for its brakes.

"They got sued because of the hydroboost brakes. Some family lost a fan belt
and the brakes went with it. The coach went backwards down a hill and so
on. Googled and can't find it??"

Is one entry they wrote. Is there any history on the suit? I can't find
anything, and if its false, id rather not see false info spread about GMC
and its motorhomes. I see far to many of them operating without any issues.

Do not think any gmc ever came with hydroboost. However if the engine dies, I can see the danger in not being able to hold the brakes if the
engine quits on an incline due to using up the vacuum boost. There are ways to help that, but it is a hazzard. I seen a picture of a coach that
almost went down the side of a cliff a few years ago from that problem.

I expect they're actually referring to SOBs with hydroboost. My Itasca - on a P 30 chassis - had hydroboost brakes as standard.

Your going to face similer problems on the standard unit if you do not know
what to do when it happens.
The Hydro Boost units have at least two pumps to stop when things like this
happens, same for Vacuum assisted ones.
Also keep in mind, there are two belts that are on that pulley, so it is BS
I do't think that law suit went anywhere as there was nothing wrong with
its operation, just an operator fault.

Jim, the Itasca had one (count it, one) pump, the combo power steering/hydroboost pump. I replaced both it and the hoses because of that... they were
original from sometime in the early 80s. Never had a problem with the system.

I think Jim is referring to 'pedal' pumps Johnny. With the large accumulator the HB's are 'supposed' to have at least two pedal pumps. Hope I never
find out.

Both systems have a minimum of 2 brake pedal pushes if functioning properly. Do not pump the brakes or let up on the pedal until you have stopped.
Better to be stopped than not be able to stop.

Oh, OK. My 23' has two feet of 4 inch pipe as a reservoir with a GM vacuum pump. The 26' has the 'spensive vacuum pump. Both will continue to stop
as long as the battery holds out. I modified the 23' after it got hot and vapor locked going up Culowee mountain and I nearly tucked it in a dropoff
getting it stopped. The following Monday I got the pump from Pic A Part and made up the reservoir.

Some how my message was deleted.
Anyway, the PS pump that support the Hydro Boost system has two belts, so I
do not buy that story of the belt breaking , causing the issue.
As John Sharp mentioned, there is a back up if you know how to use it when
it happens.
These things are some of what we teach at the convention seminars.

There is a lot to be said for having a well tuned engine that does not die
when you take your foot off the pedal, and a good maintence schedule to
address belts, hoses, brakes, tires, batteries, and other critical systems.
To say nothing about keeping your fuel tanks nearly full. Well maintained
vehicles do not stall as a matter of normal operation. If it does stall,
Why? Find it and fix it so it does not. If it really worries you, then add
back up vacuum pump, or hydraulic pressure accumulator that provides an
additional layer of security. Just don't forget, the more complex a system
becomes, the more failure prone it becomes. Just ask NASA.
