I am in the process of removing my hub and knuckle assy. to replace
bearings. My coach has 71,000 miles on it with no record of the front
bearings being replaced or serviced ( 3 previous owners). Should I
expect to have to replace the hub and knuckle ? There doesn't appear to
be much play in the bearings when I grasp the top and bottom of tire and
rock top to bottom. More play on drivers side than passenger. I am
considering sending the assy to Ken Thoma for inspection and
reconditioning.
I read the article on bearing replacement using his tools, but the
budget is limited. Any responses of guidance is much appreciated.

Lanier in my opinion that is not the best thing to do. Sorry!

what in god are we all doing here talking and hopefully learning about
repairs to the coach for if at the end we recommend sending parts to someone
else to inspect and repair. Khuckles and hubs are the easiest thing in the
world to inspect. THAN if they prove to be unservicable get them repaired.
Get the cinnabar article (mine is not here but believe it is June 1996
issue) call them at 1-800-720-2227 and ask for the reprint.

Just my opinion

The last I heard, Don Cobb (near Richmond, Va) 804-764-0138 had the
special tool to do the front bearings. When I put my coach thru Maryland
Inspection, the GMC dealer assured me that they had the special tools. It's
a good thing that I went ahead a purchased a new set of bearings, because my
old ones came back complete junk. If they had the tools, nobody knew or
cared how to use them.
