I have had a number of people ask what kind of mileage I get with the
Howell closed loop TBI fuel injection system. Its usually kind of hard to
figure out my mileage because I do most of my traveling in the hot summer
months with the Onan running lots of hours. But this fall I went on a
reasonably long trip and only used the Onan for cooking, hair drying and
such (about an hour total).=20
I covered 972 miles, mostly flat-land highway driving with maybe a 100 or
so miles of city driveling mixed in. I did use the dash air about half of
the time. I used 97 gallons of gas total. I am guessing that a couple
gallons where used to run the Onan so that would result in about 10.2 mpg.
For those interested in more detail, I have a 26' 1973 Sequoia with ~102K
miles on the original 455 engine. In addition to the TBI, I have made the
following modifications to the original engine. I upgraded to the HEI
ignition system. I lowered my thermostats to keep the engine temperature at
160 degrees. I use a cooler plug (R44S gapped at 60 thousandths). I also
replace the exhaust manifolds with Thorley headers. Other than that, the
engine is stock.
