It's called an "equalizing charge" and is used to reduce sulfating. The
"smart charger" will do it automatically, no need to concern yourself with
duration. Also, I think you're only supposed to do this once or twice a
year, not once a month. Get the book "Managing 12 Volts" - worth the price
for the section on battery charging alone.
