Hotrod GMC Alcoa vs vintage vector wheels, tough choice

Hello All,

My 1973 Canyonlands project is at the cosmetic stage. I’d like to hear opinions regarding wheels. Are vintage vector wheels a possibility? Or should I purchase new Alcoa’s. Has anyone fitted wider rims and tires? Has anyone experimented with custom rims with custom offsets? Anyone tried different tire profiles. I want it to look like the hotrod it is in spirit. What can I say, I’m a car guy. To me it’s more hotrod and less house.

Just finished the audio/video system with 4” 2 way Kickers in the cockpit ceiling, 6x9 Kenwood 3 ways in each seat pedestal, double 10” subs in 3 cu ft box under the dinette, 4x6 2 way Kickers coaxial in the rear. 2,ooo watts total. All driven by 7” in dash dvd, cd, mp3, etc, Bluetooth, nav, 3 cameras. With 2 24” flat screens, blueray player. And a 40 channel CB with PA, come back.

Dual Fantasics, Fuel tanks, lines, senders and selector valve, Cork flooring kitchen, Commercial carpet tile rear, flat screens, Leds, upgraded calipers/master, stove delete, convection/micro
455 w/ headers, HEI, kick ass audio/video installed 4/1/17

Coming soon: FItech, electric cooling fans, upgraded radiator and all fluid coolers, wheels/tires, Upgraded sway bars,
body kit (may have to fab one like moho), tinted glass, LED dock lighting, electric awning, Security/keyless system, rebuild the Onan 4000 to propane, then?

ps. Haven’t driven it a mile.

For wheels you have to have the correct bolt pattern, center hub size, correct backspacing and correct ( high enough truck grade) load rating. It is
not a good idea to vary on the backspacing as this puts very high loads on suspension parts and can change steering axis geometry and create torque
steer and bump steer (dangerous). So --very few wheels are available that meet all those specs. As far as electric fans, many have tried this but
resuts have been they don't move enough air, draw too many Amps to try to move as much as the clutch fan, and on the highway restrict air flow to
radiator. I would read all the stories on that before attempting. You would need a bigger atlernator and that requires a dual belt setup to work when
fans kick in. I would like to see pictures of your speaker installs though. Especially the pedestals. Good luck.

Alcoas or American Eagles. The is lots of weight on those wheels. Rims not designed for truck loads may fail. Some have used Dodge wheels on the
front, but they are not hub centered.
Those 'stylish' low profile tires are not load range "D" or "E" rated. They will fail under the weight of the GMC Motorhome.
Perhaps if you completely gutted the coach into a shell..

Changing the offset on the rear wheels would increase track where you probably dont want it. I have seen a few pics of coaches from back in the day
with zero offset wheels on the back, and virtually none today. Makes you wonder if something didn't work out.

The one ton front suspension upgrade uses spacers, so if had the one ton and you were making custom wheels, you could ditch the spacers and go with a
different offset. Matching front and rears in something other than the bullet hole alcoa pattern would be nice to see for a change. Im sure it won't
be cheap...

I have been running this set-up for several years now (seven to be exact) with no problems except that the All Terrains wear out really quickly
(13,000 - 14,000 miles). The current tires are worn out and I will be switching to a Cooper 245/70R16 LR-E this time around.

I have XD Rock Star wheels on my coach. Correct offset, but lug centered. My GMC 1999 Sierra 2500 pickup truck uses lug centered eight bolt 17 inch wheels with no problems.

I am thinking about the same thing. I'm adding a couch (my coach doesn't
seem to have had one), and it occurred to me that putting the sub in that
would be the way to go, it would give you 6-10 cubic feet of volume, which
is enough for a 12, or even 15" (if it fits) in a sealed enclosure (which
seems to be the way to go if you care more about quality than volume). I'm
wondering about if I can make it opening,as stuff that is bulky but low
volume won't effect sound much (a tuned system is quite another matter!).
It would still need to seal tightly, of course.
