Holding tank question

I have a '78 Royale, new to me, need to fix a leak in the black water
tank. It has the dry bath on the left side. In the process of dropping
the tank I find the bath sink and shower drain in to the black water
tank. Only the kitchen drains in to the gray water tank. The two tanks
each have a slide valve joined to one outlet on the left side just
behind the rear wheel. Is this normal? How the heck do you get the small
vent or drain pipes that come in from the top, disconnected from the
tank, they seem to be glued in.

Dick, I too have a 78 Royale side bath, and recently had my
holding tank out for repair. Mine has only the toilet
entering the tank, and a vent. The vent comes up through
the coach next to the air compressors under the rear bedroom
cushion. The vent on mine was 1.5" PVC, and was inserted
into the tank fitting without glue. The kitchen, bathroom
sink and shower all drain to the gray tank. The two tanks
have 4" drains that extend almost to the rear bumper. The
gray tank has a 90 deg elbow that turns the drain parallel
to the bumper. Next is a valve, a tee (at the end of the
black tank drain), a second valve and the discharge fitting
for the dump hose.

It seems to me that except for the toilet which bolts to the
black tank, the other drains and vents must slip into the
tanks. Otherwise, the tank could not be removed. If
someone on the Net doesn't know the answer, you might try
calling your local RV dealer. Of course, Jim Bounds would
know.

BTW while you are removing the black water tank, carefully
check that the mounting flange of the tank is not in a bind
with the top flange of the bogie frame. Mine was, and this
caused the tank to tear away from the mounting flange close
to the mounting screws. Fortunately, it was easily repaired
at a local shop.

I hope this is of some help.
