High Volume Oil Pump (Melling M-22FHV)

Guys,

There are a lot of coaches running High Volume Oil pumps. At this point we should have some history with regard to the low RPM (Less then 4,000 RPM) usage in our motorhomes..

That being said, has anyone had a problem or experience with the High Volume Oil Pump (HVOP) sucking all the oil out of the pan and suspending it on the top end? Specifically talking about the Melling M-22FHV (HVOP) which produces 20% more volume over the OEM. I was told it shouldn't be a problem due to our lower RPM and in fact will help at idle.

Just don't Use Hi pressure and Hi volume unless one does few mods.
When I use to build engines for our customers we never did both.

I am in a Gray area with my engine because I did several modifications, to include roller lifters and roller rockers. I plan on using a low viscosity Synthetic oil so hopefully it will drain down to the oil pan faster. The oil pump listed is not a high pressure pump. It is a high volume pump. I do know that Dick Patterson recommended a high pump. This pump increases the volume by 20%. I am also using a melonized gear on a billet Extreme Energy Comp Cam.

I'm wondering that because our RPM's rarely go over 3,500 RPM, the high volume pump may be a benefit , especially when idling it may not overwhelm the top end drains or starve the crank bearings.

Not sure what Barry puts in. I believe old engine was high volume. No probs either way, though I'd prefer to see higher oil pressure on the new engine at idle. Mondello wrote an Olds engine book that might be worth checking out.

What pressure are you seeing at idle?

About 15 PSI IIRC, not too concerned. Running 10W30 NAPA full synthetic. About 40 PSI @ 3k RPM.

I believe that oil pressure is perfect. My research said that fifteen PSI at idle is good.

I think you're set up is good to go.

I have not started my engine. I'm going to be putting it in later this week. It's too hot to fool with it this week.

Installed one of those in my rebuild. Drove it from coast to coast and back. No indication of oil starvation.
I am running the original output differential so my rpms are lower. Those with a higher output ratio will see higher rpms and might have and issue. I suspect not, though.
I have read much of the Mondello's book and he does talk about oil system modifications if you want to go that route. I've rebuilt a lot of V8s and I have a great deal of respect of the engineers that designed those engines. I used a high volume pump but did not op for the highest output spring choice.
