The Save the Sun gathering is interesting, but too far for us coming from California.
Anybody thinking of a western version, say in Oregon or Idaho somewhere?
It will occur August 21st, and in the west, totality will be about 5pm-ish (Happy Hour! :)
We'll need a good clear westerly view.

Here is the path:
http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html

The coast would be nice, but it's often difficult to get campsites there even without an eclipse.
Probably the whole I-5 corridor will also be a zoo.

The path is what - 2500 miles long? Surely you can find someplace along it.

Karen,

I've been looking at a couple of Oregon State parks - one near the Sisters
and one further east, closer to Idaho. however, one can't reserve a spot
until 9 months out with them Was going to initiate a conversation regarding
Sun Gathering West at the up coming 40th GMC 49ers rally in Nov.
As you pointed out, the Oregon coast would be easy and cool as that is
where it first hits the USA, but weather conditions make it more iffy.
Inland is better in that regard and if we are over the Cascades, it would
be easier to be mobile in case of foul weather. And the duration is longer
- ok only by a bit, but longer still.

Faye,

Thanks for reminding me about this, I've made my flight reservations to head for Houston in March so I can attend the GMCMI
Convention in Shawnee. It will be a short trip as I have to get back to Sydney to do some renovations on the house.

I'll start looking at putting this at the end of a tour up to Alaska.

That's terrific Fay, glad to hear it! Unfortunately we won't be at the November 49ers rally. :(

East of the Cascades makes sense, as is being out from dense forest.
High desert is good (though hopefully not too hot in August). If it is hot, we'll really need electrical hookups.
We also need a place that takes reservations, and big enough that we're likely to be able to get spots.
Someplace around central Oregon is likely to involve less travel time for most folks.
And of course, as close to the center line as possible would be nice.

Given the 9-month reservation rule, we should decide on a location (and maybe a backup) before mid-November.

I don't know which parks you had in mind, but based on the awesome map Dave L found and using the above criteria, my vote would be Cove Palisades
State Park, a little north of Bend, OR:

Just my .02

thanks!

I didn't realize Cove Palisades State Park is on Lake Billy Chinook. I'll guess that the road into it must be decent given how many RV hookup sites
it has.

How about Detroit Lake?:

Silver Falls is one I'd like to visit someday (the "jewel in the crown of the OR park system", but it's heavily forested.

Karen,

If you look on Silver Falls State Park site, under , I think, pics, videos,
etc. it shows a very nice clearing that would work well for the eclipse
viewing.
The two parks I was looking at are Silver Falls - might be hard to get
sites due to demand, but in a good area. And the other was Farewell Bend
State Recreation Area, but it is way over in the eastern side of Oregon,
but would almost be guaranteed of clear skies and is in a longer duration
area.
Anywhere between these two would work as we could always motor to a viewing
area if need be.

PS we will miss you and Dan at the Nov rally Karen. Please remember to
send me your song selections, even if you can't make it.

Ok, here's what I've come up with as a summary for the campgrounds on the Oregon Parks site. (sorry for the format; the forum doesn't seem to allow
indentation without html tags, which I'm too lazy to find...)

I didn't bother researching details on the less suitable parks, though they are mentioned. I also have not yet looked for any federal or private
parks along the route.

Reservations for the OR state parks will become available on November 17th.

OR State Parks in the path of the totality that take reservations:
------------------------------------------------------------------
West of Cascades:
-----------------
Note: all campsites to the west of the Cascade range are more likely to have clouds/fog/rain than further east.
Trees often provide interesting shadows during an eclipse, but may also block large landscape shadow views, and if too dense could
prevent seeing the eclipse.

Coastal: Note: all coastal campgrounds are hard to get reservations for even without an eclipse. Most also have heavy tree cover to the east, and
a strong possibility of fog.

- Devil's Lake

- Beverly Beach

- South Beach

Inland:

- Willamette Mission: Group campsite reservable, dry camping.

- Silver Falls: Dense forest, but there are some clearings where viewing should be possible. A popular campground, so reservations could be
difficult.

52 sites with electricity. 43 tent sites. Dump station.
Weather (Silverton, OR): average August temperatures: high 79F, low 55F, precipitation 0.67".

- Detroit Lake: On the shore of a forest-ringed canyon reservoir in the Cascade Mountains. Dense tall trees, but the campground is on the
west side of the lake, so viewing to the east should be OK if the hills aren't in the way. This is a large park.

67 sites with electricity, 102 full hookups, 94 tent sites. There is a dump station in the area, but not at the park.
Weather (Detroit, OR): average August temperatures: high 80F, low 53F, precipitation 1.06".

- Cascadia; Group campsite reservable, dry camping.

East of the Cascades:
---------------------
Note: east of the cascades, the weather is more likely to cooperate and we can likely find large open vistas that make it possible
to see the horizons and shadows of the eclipse moving across the landscape. It can be hotter than to the west.

- The Cove Palisades: Central OR, rocky desert area with canyons and lake. Large open vistas at the top of the canyon. Brush, but very few trees.

84 sites with electricity and water. 80 with full hookups. 90 tent sites. RV dump station.
There are two overnight campgrounds separated by a distance of five miles.
The Crooked River Campground consists of E loop and Cabins. It is located on the top of the canyon and provides electric and water hook-ups
only.
The Deschutes Campground consists of A, B, and C loops and Group Camps. It is located 5 miles from the park entrance down in the canyon bottom
and provides full hookup and tent sites.
Cabins are located lakeside at The Cove Marina and are open year round.
Neither campground has lakefront campsites.

Weather (Culver, OR): average August temperatures: high 79F, low 63F, precipitation 0".

- Farewell Bend: Eastern OR, desert rolling hills area on the banks of the Snake River's Brownlee Reservoir. Mostly desert, but brush and trees
along
the banks of the river. Much of the campround has trees and brush, but is on the west bank of the Snake river so eastern views should be
good.

77 sites with electricity and water. Approx 30 tent sites (including group tent sites). RV dump station. Two log cabins.

Weather (Huntington, OR): average August temps: high 92, low 61, precipitation 0.43"

I get to fly out in leas then two weeks to take a training class and visit family in oregon. I have a couple ideas and will be down near albany,
oregon that will be on the line of the rclipse.

I was wondering about this:

http://www.fosterlakervresort.com

I am wondering if silver falls may be a little more north. I do know the group camp, has to be reasonable and i know there is a big clearing. I
was just there visiting friends this past august.

I will see if i can get some better information. Mid valley i think you may get more people to come. Eastern oregon could be a better viewing but it
is a trek accross the mountains.

Silver Falls State Park is about 15 miles from my house. Tall timber and
steep canyons with little upward vision. Great place to camp, just not too
good for viewing eclipse. Bend, Redmond, Madras, Brothers, Sunriver all
central Oregon locations would be better for that.

yikes, I think we're already pushing it in terms of time. I just checked a couple of private parks near Redmond/Madras
(Lake Simtustus RV Park, and Redmond/Central OR KOA) and both are already fully booked for the eclipse. :(

Worst case, we could find some BLM land...

Yeah, we are going, hopefully in a GMC I buy soon, reservations for state
parks open November 20, I'm not sure exactly what time they mean. The
valleys should be clear skies, mountain areas less so, we were thinking the
Bend area, less crowded that the I5 area, which should be a zoo.

As far as I can tell, none of the forestry service campgrounds have electricity, and few have a dump station. It's likely to be hot, so electricity
would be very useful. Most coaches could probably run generators, but it'd sure be nice if we didn't have to.
