Tom Lins bought a new (to him) GMC and made it 35 miles before it started
stuttering and finally put him down. I'm nearly sure it's a stopped up fuel
filter but he wants to know if anyone can suggest a good garage to take it
to. I guess they're headed back to Florida. Or trying anyhow.

Thanks

bdub

Right after I sent the email to bdub a Missouri Trooper stopped to help us.
He called a local tow company for us since we were partialy blocking a lane.
The tow company figured out the problem.
The fuel filter was totally clogged next to the electric fuel pump which was also barely moving any fuel after they replaced the filter.
Also the battery was in poor shape which they replaced. (I had to use the boost switch to start the coach)
During the drive from their shop to the campground I noticed the voltage is showing 11 volts so I believe the alternator needs replacing too.

I looked at the parts interchange online and the Autozone alternator part number in the online version comes up as a starter not an alternator.
Does anyone have a good Autozone part number?
I searched Autozone for 77 Toranado alternator and I want to make sure.

And thanks bdub for the relay to the net.

we lost our alternator on during our last trip a couple weeks ago. Found an auto zone and asked for a 76 toronado. They had photos on their computer
to help identify it. I ended up having to go to a second store 5 miles away, but it all worked out. I still have the box and it says it is made by
duralast and the part number on the box is DL7157. It was $117 and I kept the core. I think I'll probably rebuild it for a spare.

They did not have a 455 engine in a Tornado in 1977.
When you ask for engine parts you should ask fo 1975. They made some minor changes in 1976.

The DL7157 is what I user. You should note that it is not the original 80 amp alternator. It is a 100 amp alternator.

Have you called Blacklister Randy VanW in Battlefield, Mo?
He's very GMC capable.

I was a little surprised to see the 100 amp rating, but wasn't sure that 80 amps was original. Is there a major downside? Without thinking about it
a bunch, it seems the most likely time you might see big current would be having a flat battery. Chassis battery is close, so probably ok, and the
coach batteries have a 60 amp breaker, right?

Unfortunately, I am in Florida right now or else we could get you fixed up. I do all my own work so don't know any good shops for the GMC. I will be
back Sunday so could help if you haven't made progress by then.

Randy,

Y'All should swing by here on your way home -- you owe me a visit & this
can't be very far out ot the way, especially as a cheap overnight spot.

Thanks Ken. We are not down here in our coach so don't have much flexibility. Keep the invite open and we will definitely make it by on a future GMC
Motorhome trip east. Or is that GMC Motorhome or GMC Motor Home or GMC motorhome or GMC motor home...I get so confused... ha!

Thanks again,

Tensioning the alternator can be challenging. Look for a small extrusion on
the back side in the direct center of the alternator. It surrounds the main
shaft on mine. You should be able to lever a flat sided prybar below that
and above the engine mount to produce the proper tension. Be careful of
your knuckles!

I would thing the 100A which is only 20A more than OE would be fine. And since a rebuilt that may be only "on a good cool day with a tail wind." To
deliver that, the RPM and loading conditions must both be present. Roughly 270 Watts more. Be sure your isolator is at least 100A or better though.

From memory I think you need DL7157 from AZ. It is rated at 100 amp which you will never or very seldom see.

It's real advantage is it puts out more current at an idle and slower speeds. Do not worry about the standard isolator which is rated a 80 amps PER
CONNECTION. So it will work just fine for you.

Before you get too far into replacing that alternator, check to see that the alternator belt on the current alternator is tight and not worn on the
sides. A correct width belt should side high in the pulley grooves. If it rides below the edge of the groove, it is worn or the wrong width. If
worn or wrong replace it with a TRUE 7/16" belt. Measure the width on any replacement belt with a 10 mm. open end wrench. If it will fit across the
belt then the belt width is too small. Do NOT buy GATES or NAPA belts as they are labeled 7/16" but are really too small 3/8". I have heard (but
never seen) that NAPA has an optional "premium" line of belts that is the correct 7/16" width.
