I had a scary moment when a young one unbuttoned their seatbelt today and took a walk to the door. It was locked, as I always do with the kids, but
thats just not good enough now that i know the seatbelt was defeated. What can i do to "tastefully" ensure that the door will not open unless you're
at least 5' tall?

Change the "T" shaped lock button on the inside for one that's straight and requires a firm grip to lift it.

Whip the stuffin' out of the little one, tell him "No" in your best command
voice, and strap his butt back in the seat. Repeat as necessary until the
behavior changes.

Jim,

Hoolee Doolee, this is 2018; and if you touch him and the "authorities" get wind of it you'll wind up in the gray bar hotel!

The fact that he could DIE if he opened the door and fell out while the coach was underway is irrelevant to "the authorities."

A person could use what ever "behaviour modification" deemed appropriate in
their social circles. There is nothing wrong with the door, or its locking
mechanism. The fault lies with the mentor trying to fix a human behavior
problem with mechanical methods. Just my OLD FART Opinion. Yours will for
sure vary.

You have got to be over 65 years of age - I love your advise and attitude!
If young people just understood - this world would be a better and safer place!

78. And my mother sent me out in the front yard to the weeping willow tree,
and I cut my own switch and took it to her. She knew how to swing it, too.
It didn't take many applications to get her point across. I am not talking
brutality here.
I never took willow switches to my children, but, I told them once,
only once, that their bad behaviour had to cease instantly. If it did not,
and I got up from what I was doing, and the appropriate corrective action
was taken. I was consistent with my response, and rarely had to repeat it.
Both of my kids turned out well. One is a graduate of Willamete University
Law school, the other one took a year and a half to get through one
semester at Southern Oregon University. He went into the auto
sales business, and still is involved in it. One of the best wrenches I
have ever seen. Good citizens both of them.

Well, I'm going on 57 and "fondly" recall the swing of a wooden spoon every once in a while. My older brother (67) still has what he calls the
"Memorial Spoon"--where my mom swung, and missed as he dodged, breaking the spoon on the tile counter.

Gents, come on now. A lot of assumptions here about my parenting that are
far from accurate, far from relevant, and far from your business.

I'll look elsewhere for an idea.

This is like discussing politics.
I'm taking this in with a smile on my face.

A hair brush for me. But, we never spanked our kids and they have turned
out just fine.
As far as the "authorities" are concerned, Rob is right, I had many
"fights" with the"do-gooders" of Social Services in my legal career as a
Public Defender. Once they get involved it's hard to get rid of them.

I think Rob M's idea of changing out the lock button is your best bet, short of installing a hook and eye, or a slide bolt, up high where the kid
can't reach it

Will,

None of this is really aimed at you. And, as Rob has mentioned in the
past, we get in the mode of sitting around the wood stove chewing the fat

Will,
Pay no attention to those guys. Hard to have effective discipline after the
child has been sucked out the door.
I think a hook and latch at the top would do the trick.

Will,

Notwithstanding my prior "piling on" post, I think your question was certainly legitimate. I certainly didn't mean to insult you or your parenting.
That said, I don't have young kids anymore but I have used the "kid" gates once I get to a stop, for my dogs. I certainly think you could fashion
something similar to this to prevent a young child from getting past a certain point to the doors, at least in enough time to stop them.

Actually, I'd use one of the hooks like on the icebox door - one that has a spring loaded lock across the bottom with a stiff sorung.

Food for thought, add an electric door lock module and remove the knob.
You could wire the module to a switch on the dash and the only way to unlock it would be from the drivers seat.
Potential escape issue, but eliminates opening the door by accident.
