Should be no problem with the stock air cleaner. IIRC, the Edelbrock
Performer manifold raises the carb and air cleaner around three inches over
the Toro manifold(the Toro being one inch lower than a standard 455
manifold). I think Darren Padget has this setup, which is what prompted him
to come up with his version of the raised hatch. Hopefully he'll chime in
here too.
BTW, according to their web site(bottom of
http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/man_selec.html), Edelbrock measures
manifold height by laying a straightedge lengthwise across the carb mount
and measuring from the manifold gasket sealing surface to the lower edge of
the straightedge. The measurements for the Olds 455 Performer are
front-2.50", rear-3.90". According to the website, average the two for
carb mounting height.
