hi everybody,

fellow GMCr here. excited to see a new forum for these great machines!

I am one who prefers to keep private information private (strictly confidential) while on the internet for the most part for reasons I'll refrain from getting into here but this has been problematic for many on the original GMC network where TPTB preferred harassment then banning for this reason so I wanted to make my choice to remain private here known right from the start just as I did there and see if thats going to also be problematic here before I go any further.

I treat others as I wish to be treated, honorably. both in real life and on the internet but have good reason to keep those two (public & private) separate. I wish to go by the forum user name 'gmc260' here but certainly not opposed to sharing personal details in confidence while face to face. and no, Im not world famous or anything like that.

I only have one question before I continue on posting here. Is my (and perhaps others) wish to remain private on this public forum, honorable or not? thank you in advance.

sincerely, gmc260

edited to add my GMCnet build thread experience: http://gmc.backyardwildlife.com/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&th=35677&prevloaded=1&rid=0&start=0

I for one have no problem with anonymity. While I'm not as active as it seems you are in separating my "internet persona" from my real life one, I prefer not to use last names, specific areas, etc. I have also had multiple requests for my full name on the other site, but no one has harassed me about it.

Looks like your rig is undergoing a paint job? Can't wait to see it finished!

Anonymity is no problem here. As long as everybody plays by the rules, anyone can choose to remain anonymous.

Are you doing your own paint? Mine is going to need a paint job desperately.

Very good, thanks Mike, Administrator, & Mike.

its great to see a modern forum come into existence for these GMCs. I think its what many have waited for and if all goes well, it should prove to be invaluable to new owners going forward and will also help keep more of these machines on the roads. had never joined facebook but started browsing the GMC page there last year with no plans to join FB just for that either but noticed the link to this new forum.

I have two 260s one '74 Glacier and this '76 EL2. doing all the work on both including the paint on the '76 and going back with original color. classic car service and restoration is my trade but Ive become somewhat familiar with these GMCs in the last few years and happy to share the little bit Ive learned about them given the chance.

I'll collect some photos together of the two coaches I have soon and start a thread and Im really looking forward to others build threads too.

thanks again and three cheers for gmcrvforum.com!

I generally have no issues with anonymity, as long as the individual remains civil and respects the rules.

All that i ask is that the anonymous members help us when they post questions. Providing the necessary details such as vehicle specifics and location when applicable can aid in us in providing a more accurate response.

I prefer to have a sense of who someone is, but I can respect anonymity if someone has reasons. Is there a first name we could use, though? It always feels a bit awkward to me to refer to someone by a made up username; I guess it just doesn't seem very personable to me. It wouldn't have to be a real first name, it could be anything you wished your mama had named you. Unless you wish she'd named you gmc260, then I guess I'll have to go with that. :D

I find it funny that you ask others for a name, but your’s doesn’t show in any posts. It’s your choice and I’m ok with that. Just sharing an observation.

I added it to my signature for all to see on day one. It seems maybe the mobile site doesn't show signatures? Also, we asked in the "what would you like to see on this site" thread if names could be displayed below user names (optionally, of course). I don't think there's much else I can do, aside from typing it manually each time. That's not something I'm in the habit of, and it would be intermittent at best.

edit: Yep, I just confirmed the mobile site hides signatures, while the full site does not. I normally use the PC, but now that I know, it'll bug me when I use the phone.

Anyway, we're glad to have you here, gmc260! And thanks for contributing so much content right off the bat, I think it'll help get this site off the ground.

Paul,
Thanks for pointing this out. I hadn’t noticed the signature issue until you mentioned it.

I saw your input about having names visible under the user ID, but at the time I didn’t pay much notice to who made the suggestion. Sorry if I sounded a bit snarky.

No worries, I believe the forum conspired against us to facilitate a misunderstanding!

hi GMC.LES, seems reasonable to me. thought about putting both coaches in the signature lines but with two I'd still be having to enter those details anyway when asking specific questions. thanks

hi pvfjr, I prefer 'gmc260'. " That which we call a rose, By any other word would smell as sweet." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_rose_by_any_other_name_would_smell_as_sweet

Ive attempted to explain my wishes on other forum in the past but the gist of it is both philosophical and political so Ive since learned better than to elaborate more about that in public.

thanks again, happy to be here with the rest of the new school! all the photos in my build thread https://www.gmcmhforum.com/threads/76-eleganza-ii-project.343/ have never before been published onto the internet and shall not be authorized by myself to be published elsewhere other than gmcmhforum.com without prior written agreement. I hope they help and hope to see others add their content exclusively here too.

HAhaha! that made me LOL but so true. FWIW I turned the signature line feature off after seeing one with a wide ranging SL on here. we can each do this in the 'preferences' area, I use it elswhere too. I think signature lines should be limited to one line of text but glad we can toggle this 'feature' off however it may also appear that I am asking stupid questions from time to time this way. :giggle:

all the best

gmc260,
I’m sure you know this already, so I‘m mentioning it for the benefit of others who may not know.

Providing coach build details in your signature helps all of us share relevant knowledge in an efficient manner. In the absence of the coach build details being listed, additional questions and answers may be required to get to the final result. Some members “might not” be willing or able to undertake that additional effort if it requires more than a single-post response. Many of us still work, following this forum while on the go.

AFAIK it is a non-issue, since it mainly affects the few members who don’t want to make their info public. Hopefully these members are ok with the relatively small consequences of their decisions.
