Hello All, We Drank The Punch and bought a 1973 Glacier (Snow White) that needs restoration (great price) unfortunately the one thing I forgot to check before driving home final drive fluid level and destroyed the pinion gear within the first hour of our 4 hour journey home Sunday, it turned into almost 7 hours. Oh well got her home and it's water under the bridge, lol.

It is gutted but she has great bones and we are getting started on collection needed part and improvements, we will be completing all the work and I am sure we will have some questions and looking for words of advice, we will try and keep the build updated on here as we go.

Thanks
Scott

Scott, welcome to the fold. Sounds like your adventures have already started! BTW, its ok, you can tell us the truth, you pooched the diff so you had a viable excuse to upgrade the gearing....we inderstand these kind of things here.....lol.

LMAO, Nope being we towed it 150 miles with our 1/2 ton van, 1 tow strap and 2 CB's that's not the way I wanted to spend the day! But now I just need to decide what ratio, lol.

It should be noted my wife did a great job towing!!!

Where are you located?

Hey if you ran the engine at least you had brakes, right?

Northern Indiana, just added info to my signature.

Yes ran the engine for brakes & power steering except for that time it died and did not realize it.

Scott,
Welcome to the asylum....
It has been gutted, so it is real light.
I would have to think about the final drive. Being a 26, I would be temped to go right to the 3.70.
If it has nothing left, it is real light. I would still lean towards the 3.70.
Oh, and before you go to far, download the maintenance manual that covers 73, some things are different.

That reminds me, I didn't check that at the last service.......

That was going to be my first question to the community, 3.42 or 3.70? I am about 4hrs from Cinnabar so I can drive there and pick up a 3.42 for just under $1,700 or I order the 3.70 for $2,500 and hopefully get the $350 core charge back.

Should I post this as a different topic elsewhere?

Thanks again,
Scott

Just my $0.02, if you plan on bringing along a Toad go with the 3.70. If not, go with the 3.42.

It's only ~200 rpm difference at 70mph anyway, they are pretty close.

I don’t use a toad and have the 3.42. I have no issues, but most of the community recommends the 3.7 for towing.

If we do tow anything it would be a 6 x 10 trailer with motorcycles or bicycles, thats after I find a hitch at a "fair" price, Allied is around $700 shipped, Blain is near me but he is having some health issues and not welding up hitches anymore. I have not checked with Cinnabar yet

Scott,
If you are in northern Indiana, you are in Greatlakers country and not all that far from Chippewa Falls. Make the plan now to get to the International Convention September 24 to 30. Get there, if you come in an empty coach with air mattresses and sleeping bags, you will not be the first to do so. Do what you have to do, but get there.
See you then, I often attend the new owners meeting just to greet people.

I did see that, we will try, we will be putting it up on stands to complete all the mechanical work first but I dought I will get it all done by then. I actually have family in Eau Claire.

Welcome to the crazy club! I see Alcoas and a non-original AC on your GMC. 2 steps in the right direction, only 1 million more to go. 😉 Keep the faith. Matt has good advice, get to the international rally, even if you have to overnight off site. It will be well worth your time. Also meet up with your local GMC club, you might find some helping hands for your adventure.

Safe Travels,
Russell
