Yesterday, I installed the HEI distributor in place of the old point
style.

IIRC, HEI's are located a tooth off from points type distributers. The
first thing to check if you're certain the wiring is good is to see if
you have it installed correctly. Pretty basic stuff but it's one of the
most common mistakes made even by the big kids. Mark the dist. housing
where the number one post is on the cap. Run #1 to 8 deg. BTDC & check
to see if the rotor is pointing at the #1 post. If it isn't, pull the
distributer and using a long screwdriver, turn the oil pump drive in the
direction it needs to go. Remember, #1 on these is at about the 5
oclock position on the cap. Check your manual.
