I checked at Pep Boys, NAPA, and Auto Zone in the Chattanooga area and
none had the K-D Tool. However, Advance Auto Parts had a AmPro "High
energy Ignition Spark Tester" which may be equivalent to the K-D tool.
The AmPro part no. is T71240. It cost $7. It plugs into the connector to
spark plug on the spark plug wire(s), unplugged of course from the a spark
plug. At the other end of the tool there is a wire with alligator clip
that you attach to a ground. It has a adjustable screw that can be used
to increase or decrease the air gap between two contacts inside the hard
plastic case of the tool. That way you can see if the HEI distributor is
providing enough current and voltage to fire the spark plug without
getting the beegeebees shocked out of yourself. Its got some kind of
scale marked on the side along the air gap that is somehow supposed to
tell you how much voltage is being produced by the coil, but the
directions that came with tool are pretty sparse and I haven't figured out
yet how to read the scale. Anyway, as Arch would say, that's what I did.
