Guys,

I have a quick easy question.

It seems nowadays the parts counters can only identify a part via a known vehicle.

What vehicle is everyone using for the 4 wire distributor cap for a 455/403 Howell system with EBL?

Thanks for any correct answers. The local Autozone cannot get the part unless I give them a vehicle.

Take care. And everyone have a wonderful weekend?

If I don't have a part number to give to the sales associates at a parts store, I look for the gray haired guy, or visit one of the old school parts houses that are primarily populated with gray hairs! RockAuto (look for '73 GMC Transmode or '76 Toronado) is a great site for sourcing part numbers of various parts, and parts manuals for our coaches are readily available. Visit bdub.net . In answer to your question, the distributor cap is the same as any other vehicle with a 455/403, year appropriate. There are 3 types, standard HEI, a points distributor (remote coil, '73/'74?), and a boat distributor (points only, the wires go "out" instead of up, non-HEI).

Eric,
Thank you very much. I picked one up for an Oldsmobile 88. It was the last piece of the puzzle for the new engine startup. I installed the cap and started the engine and ran it for 5 minutes. It appears everything worked well. I had to run for my granddaughter's christening.

I'm going to pick up where I left off on Monday and hopefully give it a bath and drive it down the road.

Thanks again for your help. You take care and have a wonderful evening,
Tom K.

The Howell EFI is based off the Chevy/GMC trucks with 454, from about 1988-1993. It could be the same cap as many V8s from that era, GM is good for that.

The computer controlled distributor is out of a like a 1982 olds 307. Like a cutless.

The part that has been in my coach since 2019 is:

Cardone 30-1873 Remanufactured HEI Electronic Distributor and Module (Renewed)

But not sure where or if you can get a cardone remanufactured one anymore?

The computer controlled distributor uses a 7 pin module.

The cap, coil and rotor are all the same as the 75-77 olds 455 gmc motorhome. (403 too i am sure).

If you have the vacuum advance distributor with a 4 pin module. Then part number is the same as our gmc
Motorhomes and toronado

Great info guys.I appreciate it, as will everyone in the future who looks back with the same questions.

Thanks a bunch and you guys have a wonderful weekend.
