I note that at the point on the shaft where the lower oilite bearing
is there is some wear on the shaft. I would have thought the wear would
have occured on the bearing but it appears to be mainly on the shaft.

Claude,
As all GMC owners will testify to, nothing lasts forever. Now is a
good time to replace the high-wear components in you HEI, mainly, the
bushings. GM Shaft Kit 1894379 is what you need. A new cap, rotor &
plug wires & you're good again for a long time. Check the mechanical
advance weight pivot pins. These are also high wear items. A dab of hi
temp grease on each goes a long way on each. Suck on the vacuum advance
line & see if you can move the advance mechanism in the distributer and
also if you can build up vacuum in the unit & hold it by placing your
tongue over the end of the vacuum line. (A MightyVac works well here.)
To keep your new plug wires orderly and away from heat and each other,
try this inexpensive method. Works well & lasts forever.
