Ed.........When I fire my GMC up after it's been sitting for a while, I
have to run the engine a bit faster than an idle to get the water pump to
start shoving water through the heater core . After that it works fine. Of
course driving it does the same thing. Reach in through the passenger side
opening and see if the hoses are hot after the thermostat opens. Pull the
hoses off the vacuum shutoff and replace it with a length of tubing. If you
get heat, the shutoff is bad. I put a manual shutoff on mine. I open it
when the weather gets cool and close it when it gets warm. No more hot air
in the summer that I can't shut off. Let us know what you come up with.

Ed,
We're all at different levels of experience and mechanical inclinations
with nearly non-existant knowledge each others capabilities, so
assumptions made, as is common in daily life, can be very misleading. In
my experience on and off the net, help seems more abundant when I
describe where I stand and what I've done to help myself.
In this specific situation, what is Your engine temperature?
Is water of whatever temperature making it to, (and thru) the heater
core?
Can We "Assume" the heater fan is running?
