Does anyone know of a source of replacement heater/AC dash control module
for the '77-'78 models?

According to Cinnabar they are no longer available.

What is the problem with the old one?

I think that you'll find that you will have to find a junk yard
module from a car and use some of the parts from your existing
control such as a switch and the disk that programs the vacuum lines.
Probably just as easy to keep your old one and salvage the needed
parts to repair it from a junkyard one. Check various GM autos to
find a similar one. If the center plastic pin is broken, I believe
that someone posted info about a replacement metal one a year or so
ago on the GMCnet.

It functions normally but the mode lever binds and hangs up on the detents.
I tried shooting some lube around the sliding parts as best I could (through
the slots) but I guess I should remove it from the dash to figure out what
the problem is.

Any tips on what is binding?

Richard,

The old grease has probably hardened over the years. I took mine out
last year and disassembled it - not too tough if you take your time and
take good notes; I cheated - used the digital camera to take pictures of
the various steps and then used them for reference in the reassembly.
Cleaned up the old mess and used white lithium grease to lube
everything. Works like a new one now.

Richard - probably grit in the area where it slides or else a bent
part or a worn pin in the center. You'll probably find out what the
problem is when you take it apart.

My guess is the cable is seized under the front exterior access
door. The cable gets rained on and over a period of disuse and
seizes.
Have someone watch from outside while you try moving the dash
lever.
If a No Go, remove the plastic panel on the back of your dash, pull
out the radio and remove the control assembly.
Remove the offending cable and soak in penetrating oil overnight.
If it moves in the morning, goop excessively on the previously
seized end with grease, sliding the cable in and out to lube it up
and coat it, and put the whole mess back together again.

While you've got the back off, you might as well have a nice look
around. You don't want to be taking that cover off on a regular
basis.

It's not difficult, but it is time consuming..........and that's the kind
of problem I had.

Isn't it terrible to HAVE to travel that much. Life must be tough. I wish I

Richard - I believe you said that it was in the lever to change the
mode -- heater, vent, a/c, etc. If its the temperature control lever
that's giving you the problem, then it likely is a bent cable as Arch
points out.

Yes, it's the mode lever. But when I get it apart I'll lube the cable, too.
It's a little sticky.
