A non subscriber has asked me to recommend a glue he can use to cement
his headliner in a few places. Can I have 2 or 3 good suggestions to pass
on to him, please?

Thanks.......

Please don't take this as a negative, but when I started a couple of years
ago, the fabric (original) was coming down from the ceiling and away from the
walls and looked ratty. After asking around, I came to the conclusion that
replacement was the most cost effective.

The problem is that the glue that was used is getting old and it won't get
any better. No one that I talked with had had any good experience with
reglueing.

I don't know if it works or not but was told to use vinyl wallpaper paste in
a syringe with needle insert in several places and roll with a small paint
roller to squish around use a piece of wax paper between roller and
headliner let dry a short time and then roll again. Like I said I have not
done this but was just told about it.

Dave replies:

Wayne, I couldn't agree with you more. I also replaced my headliner but
it wasn't me asking. The fellow asked me what glue to use. I will pass
your recomendations along with mine and anyone else who offers one but
this fellow may not need a total replacement or may not want to make the
investment.

did you add a layer of foam between the luan and the vinyl? Would the lack
of the foam reduce the soft look, or am I just seeing sagging?

Tried a couple of different ones. Unfortunatly, the original with the foam
backing resists anything I tried. Only solution I found was to replace the
headliner. Sorry I cant help.

I did a great thing to mine and that was to put in a dropped ceiling. Only
3/4" but it allowed me to put in some great new recessed light fixtures. Love
it. I think Gene has some pictures on his web site. Usde 1/8" luan mahogony
and it worked great. Lots/ and I mean lots of work, but great job. Anyone
can email me if they want any additional info.

I replaced several small sections using Liquid Nails. I tried a number of
adhesives but none would hold the liner up long enough for the glue to dry.
The trick is to thoroughly clean the fiber board and backside of the
headliner. I used lighter fluid on a rag for cleaning. HOWEVER, the
results weren't as attractive as I would have liked - some staining,
unevenness and lumps. I think I would just replace rather than try to
re-glue the entire headliner.

I used a 3M Trim and panel adhesive that I got in spray cans from an
autobody supply dealer. It worked for a while, but as others have noted, the
problem wasn't the adhesive, it was the headliner deteriorating. I actually
peeled away the rotting foam, and the "patch job" held up better. In the
end, I realized it was a lost cause.

Redid mine with luan and perforated vinyl just like original. I got the
material from a place called Kantor in Newark NJ. (They advertise in
Hemmings). It was real heavy duty, heavy weight and looks great.

The material I bought had a layer of foam bonded to it. It was real nice
stuff. I believe it was intended to be used on a Mercedes, so I felt it
appropriate to use on the Mercedes, or Rolls Royce of motorhomes.

cement
his headliner in a few places. Can I have 2 or 3 good suggestions to pass

3M Super 77, I helped Ron Tase put his headliner in using this spray
adhesive, have it positioned right the first time, there is no second
chance.

That is VERY true. This stuff sticks like you would not believe. I wasted a
big chunk of headliner when I positioned it wrong, and couldn't get it off
without destroying it. BE CAREFUL!

For what it worth, I used "Super Trim Adhesive" from 3M.
Part number 08090. It was recommended to me by another
GMC owner. The label on the can states that it is "a contact
adhesive designed for bonding vinyl tops, heavyweight
headliners and hood silencer pads where high strength and
heat resistance are needed. For light weight headliners or
other lightweight materials including adequately supported
flexible vinyl's, foam, insulation and fabrics used 3M
General Trim Adhesive (Part Number 08080)"

The stuff came in a spray can and I had to use about 12
cans. Its a contact cement and I had excellent results
gluing my fuzzy headliner material (just like in the expensive
SOB coaches) to 1/8" Laun plywood. I also used it on
the side panels by the windows.

I have installed a medium weight vinyl headliner on my gmc with very good results. I used ultra heavy duty clear wallpaper adhesive avail from any paint and wallpaper store. The nice thing about this stuff is that you have about an hour of 'open" time if you need to reposition or work out air bubbles. Also is water cleanup and will wash off of headliner easily before it dries.
