e rated tires would be easy....little did i know.....has anyone found a
steel 16 inch....gm dually wheel works but have to go to larger studs,
anyone done that? alcoa's are back ordered 6mo. and i need tires.....

I recently bought 8.75x16.5 michelin xps ribs. store had to order them as
they do not sell enough to justify stocking them, but it only took a coupla
days to get them. They are still available no problem. Great tire also.

I have a number of pictures about the headliner posted on my site:
www.henry-davis.com/GMC/

We used luan plywood as the new headliner, strating with the rear and
working forward. The last piece was painted tonight and will go in after I
wire the new stereo speakers.

A few things to look out for

1. the original headliner was flexible so any brackets that ot in the way
just pushed the liner to the side (or crumpled it). Luan and similar
plastic materials don't crush well. So, you may have the new headliner
catch on a bracket that you didn't know was there. Double check for
mounting brackets and other after-market add-ons. They sometimes interfere.

2. hard surfaces will reflect sound pretty well. So, you could end up with
an echo. The solution is to apply a fabric to the inside surace of the
headliner. There are many alternatives. We've left ours painted white for
now - after our cross country trip we'll reassess the wisdom of no fabric.

3. getting molding screw holes to line up in the new headliner can be a chore.

4. run any new cables that you think that you may want while you have the
headliner down.

5. for most panels we found that letting the headliner hang down in the
middle and then pushing it up was the easiest way to get the new headliner
in place. Of course it does make a pretty loud noise.

and thought finding 16.5
>e rated tires would be easy....

I've found no substantive difference in buying 16.5 or 16 LRE tires in my
area. I can get the 16.5s easier because the school buses here use them
exclusively. 16" Goodyears took about 10 days to come in when I switched to
the Alcoa wheel.

Cinnabar shipped my second set of Alcoas a few weeks ago after less than a
one week delay.

Travis...

For comparitive purposes, my Costco quotes $147.88 per for 8.75x16.5 XPS
ribs, including balancing , taxes and warranty. How does that compare to
your deal?

TIA

Hi, Dave, I bought mine from a local dealer and paid $150 each, and that
didn't include balancing or taxes. Sounds like you're getting a better deal!

But I am happy with the tires at least...

Tires:
I bought Goodyear Workhorse "E" 16.5x8.75 tires about 2 years ago. I now
have
27000+ miles on them. I estimate that 1/2 the tread is still left. They have
been great tires - no trouble and the price was right. Goodyear store
charged me $600 flat for 6. That included mount, bal, and all taxes. I also
noticed that WalMart carries them at superstores. They are now about $95
each - special order. Many walmarts will now mount RV tires.

Headliner:
We did our own about 18 mos ago. Total cost was about $250. Plus that
included new sides (ie around windows). It took us a long weekend and we had
never done it before.

Remove all hanging cabinets. Big modules stay put.
Remove AC covers, ribs, fan covers, etc.
Remove old headliner carefully as you will use it as template.
Remove window trim and upper side panels carefully (templates).

All materials at Home Depot:
Insullation: Alum sided bubble insulation in rolls ($60)
Roof panels: Thermaply 4x8 sheets alum backed (6 @ $9 ea)
Side panels: Vinyl covered 1/8 plywood. 4x8 sheets. (4 @ $15 ea)
Contact cement (Heavy duty exterior) (2 gal @ $25 ea)
Finish material: Light weight indoor/outdoor carpet ($0.45/sqft)

We reinsulated roof and side with bubble insulation & alum tape.
We then covered the ThermaPly with a very short nap indoor/outdoor light
weight carpet. Heavy duty exterior contact cement to glue carpet to
thermaply. Cut panel to basic size using old panels as templates. Glued
carpet to panels prior to cutting to exact size. Gave better finish.

Also, instead of cutting the side panels in lots of small pieces like GM did
to save material, we cut full sheets for one piece. Looks much better.

All went really smooth and the end result with all the extra insullation
values made for a quieter ride and cooler coach in summer.

Some pics at http://www.songtek.com/gmc/

Hope that helps
