Is there a header gasket that WORKS for a 403?
Which one would it be?

Thanks

Michael,

I have used a number of exhaust gaskets over the years from the Thorley header gaskets when I first got headers in 2003. The ones that I have used on the original manifolds and on the header is the Remflex Gaskets.

You want the Remflex part# 11-001 for headers and they work for both the 403 and 455.

If you are still using the stock exhaust manifolds then you want Remflex part# 11-003. Fit both the 403 and 455.

I have both them from local autoparts stores and they have been cheaper from Jim K and that includes postage too.

Follow the instruction on the package and DO NOT torque them over the suggested 14 to 18 ftlbs and I have always used 15 ftlbs for the headers. The stock manifold torque specs are 20 ftlbs. Put them in and torque them and then drive 500 miles and then just check the torque again. The center top bolt should be tighten to no more that 8 ftlbs and you can cock the headers and stock manifolds and cause gasket failure.

What John said! I have Doug Thornley headers on my 78 403. They were on it
when I bought it from the second owner in 2008. It had 87,000 miles then.
Now, 9 years later and 140,000 miles, the Remflex gaskets, as well as the
coating on the headers are still good. I don't think iron manifolds last
that well. Make sure both gasket surfaces are flat, chase all the threads,
DON'T OVERTORQUE THEM, and you should be good to go. Oh yeah, be sure and
fire sleeve your speedometer cable. It comes really close to the headers.
It will melt and bind your cable, and strip out your governor gear in the
transmission.

Mike, This is what I sent you earlier.

When you look at the message you should look for a Light blue line just under the message you got and commented on and it will say “See More From XXX XXXXXX” the X’s representing the name who sent the previous message in the thread.
