They don't put out more than MY round ones!!! I installed H4 halogen
headlights from a Mercedes. They are VERY bright but have a good cutoff
to prevent blinding oncoming traffic. And the High Beam is like having
4 headlights on bright!!

The H4 is a separate bulb that fits into the reflector unit. They are
the same size as the OEM headlights and NO, I didn't have to change any
wiring. I actually bought them at a flea market (the bulbs were burned
out) intending them as spares for my motorcycle, which uses the same
size. I use the 'legal' 55/60 watt H4 bulbs (or lamps, if you
prefer). I have used 80/100 watt H4's in my motorcycle (and in my AMC
Eagle when I had it) but the life expectancy was too low, so I went back
to 55/60's.

If it simply a question of more light, and not design, then you can
switch to a european headlamp system wich has high power halogen bulbs.
The glass housing is separate, and the bulb inserts like the new auto
head lamps. Europe has had them for 25 to 30 years. You can get bulbs
with different wattages and go as high as 80 low and 160 high. The pair
I used happened to be square, but round is also available from Hella. I
installed 100/80 watt H4 bulbs (a tad over the legal limit) and you can
go higher if you want. I got mine from a store here in Rochester and
can get you the info, but if you do a web search on Hella Lights you can
probably find a better price on the web.

I have used Hella lamps and have only had 2 burn out over a 15 to 20
year period. The 100/80 are great and the cut off is extremely tight on
the Hella aftermarket housings.

I've used halogens on my motorcycles, cars, truck, and now my GMC. I
agree you get more light with the 80/100. That's what I use on the M/C
because it only has 1 light. It has to be replaced about every other
year (I've had the M/C since '84). I used them on my old Eagle, and
had replace them twice. The 55/60's lasted about twice as long as the
80/100's did. My Eagle was my 'Light Machine'. I had H4's 80/100 for
my Low/Hi Beams, H1 100 for the Hi Beams with H3 55 Fog lamps plus H3 55
Driving lamps. When I turned on the High Beams and the driving lights
(510 watts total), You could read a newspaper 1/2 a mile down the road.
It was not possible to 'overdrive' the headlights. I may still add more
lights (probably fog lamps) to the GMC to improve the lighting under wet
conditions.

I know the Hella's you mentioned are good units (that's what I have on
the M/C). The Mercedes units are made by Bosch, and they are almost the
same as the Hella's.
