Halon and several other fire extinguishing materials have potentially
lethal side effects at certain concentrations. Health risks include among
other things, abnormal heart beat and death. (CO2) can kill at the right
concentration too).
I am not an expert in fire extinguisher technology, but I spent many days
putting out enclosed pertroleum fires at a weapons test facility while I
was in college. We used water, foam, CO2, and classified materials. We also
tried commerical powders. They make a fairly good mess of hot metal.
Water will work fine on gasoline fires with the right nozzles, spray
pattern and volume. I used to put out aviation gas fires in enclosed spaces
with water fog. One problem is that it's pretty easy to get a compartment
full of partially burned petroleum and then get a flashover when air
accidentally hits it before all ignition sources are cooled enough. The
experience is unpleasant.
I've been looking for automatic systems that give a variety of options. I
haven't made a decision yet, but you might want to look at:
