Hadley Horns

I am the 3rd owner of a 1977 GMC Palm Beach that has a set of "Hadley
Horns" mounted on the roof. These horns were not functional when I
purchased the motorhome. The previous owner had no info on them.

I can not find a model number or any ID info, but if the top plate is
removed, there is thin "shim" type metal plate that sits over the air
chamber. There is also a plastic hose connected to the horns. I can
access this by removing the driver side speaker/light assembly, but I
can't get up to the bottom of the horns, where they are mounted to the
roof. to check the connection. (I don't want to remove them from the
roof if possible)

Are these horns "air' or "vacuum" drive? There is a lanyard type
actuator hanging down in the cab, that is attached to some type of
valve on the horn assembly. I attempted to connect them to an air
supply, but still got no sound.

Any info on operation, ID, "getting them to work" or ??? will be
appreciated.

Try hooking up to vacuum...loudest dang horns I ever heard were vac powered.
Won't hurt 'em if wrong.

The Hadleys that I've seen are air powered. Particularly since you have
plastic tubing running to the horns it's likely that they are air powered.
I think that ours are 100 PSI+ horns. Check to see if they are manually
operated only, or if there is a solenoid controlling the air.

Run off a seperate compressor and tank since I want a little more
redundancy if it's cheap. The Hadleys use mor pressure and I've been
checken to crank it up and run the horns off the same compressor - although
I've thought about it.

We bought Ambassador horns - they're BIG. I'd probably go a size smaller if
I had it to do over again. The complete Hadley kit was ~350 with all of the
parts. Since the compressor is the same as what pumps my bags right now I
consider it the uliotmate in sparing.

The ambassadors have two sets of mountings to do: nearly under the air
plenum and towards the front. You need to run air and a control wire for
the solenoids.

I ran mine off a Tee from the the air tank, then to a
12VDC valve, tied parallel to the regular electric horns. so I get
the regular horns & the air horns. But I put mine behind the front bumper
to cut down on things on top...
if you look the the pictures of our coach on the net at the COOP site
you,ll see horns on the drivers side . Course the bumpers are off in the
pictures because of the painting . :)

Well that explains why I have a small hole with a rubber grommet
under these horns
in the front end cap above the driver's seat.

Mine has one (disconnected when I bought the GMC). I will take a
look tonight when I get home from work and see if it has any identifying
marks that might be of help. The PO had a toggle on the dash that actuated
the solenoid. I assumed the pump was bad so he disconnected it. But when I
was replacing the radio, I noticed the toggle switch was shot. And Emery,
best of luck with that new engine! walter bright, 76 GB.

Paul Bartz can give you the name of a company there in K'zoo or BC, MI that
makes them, or you can always use the Skinner two way valve from an
Electro-level air suspension system.

Grover makes a plastic bodied 12vdc air valve for air horn use, but we
have found the the plastic tends to crack easy. part # 1126
a better valve and the one that I use on the airhorns for our GMC is
made by KIP the part number on it is 241114-03 its made for 12vdc
and draws a very low current . brass body , it's been hanging out in the
weather on our horns for several years. I have a spare but I,ll see it
they are still available. If anyone is interested..
One set of horns I would love to get, are the Stuttertones that
we use on our fire trucks. love that sound...

Do you have a URL or phone I can call on the Stuttertones and KIP valve?
My relay clicks but my horn is dead. I would like to get something to
replace it that's LOUD. Anyone else got any replacement horn suggestions?

The Stuttertone horns are made for emergency equipment such as fire trucks
and I'm not sure you would like them, they are very raspy sounding, I,ve been
a vol. firefighter for 30 years and I,ve grown used to them, they really get
your
attention. they are made by GROVER and you might be able to get them. from
your
local fire eqipment dealer, I,ve yet to find a URL for dealer or public sales.
but I,m still looking.

The KIP valves are would be rather expenive if you bought just one, I,ve
picked them up at the fleamarket whenever the tool delaers are in town,
thats why I said, I,ll
see if they are still available.
