Grote LED clearance light installation

Hello all. I am replacing clearance lights with the Grote LED replacements and am curious how what hardware you guys used. From the research I've
done, it appears most are using blind well nuts with 10-24 screws. Problem is the heads on the #10 screws will not fit in the hole of the new lights.
Like not even close. I ground one down and made it work but I'm not really wanting to do this 20 times.

Have they changed design or are people actually using like 6-32 screws and accompanying well nuts? (I'm pretty confident even #8 screw heads wont fit
either...)

Maybe allen head screws?

That was going to be my suggestion stainless allen heads or 8-32's I do not remember what I used.

Filister head screws fit fine. Be sure to use that antiseize on the threads!

#10 screws seem unnecessarily large for that application. It's been years since I did it, but I know they weren't #10 nor #6, so they must've been
#8. No fit problems.

I went with 8-32 well nuts and allen head screws. I was right though, regular #8 screws were a no go...

If you use the Moulded one piece 2 wire led lights from Maxxima, #M20311Y
for yellow, or #M20311R for red, the 8-32 filister head stainless steel
screws will fit the holes perfectly in the lamps. I use a wellnut made of
neoprene with a brass female threaded insert. It is available from McMaster
Carr. The Outside diameter measures 3/8". I wrangle the factory moly
anchors out of the openings, clean up the holes with a 3/8" drill bit, and
permanently adhere them in place with a non hardening flexible sealant like
3M PERMANENT 5300. I cut a strip out of the center of the closed cell foam
gasket included with the lights to allow the wires room to lay flat and not
hold the gasket and lamp proud of the curved roof. When you see it, you
will understand what I mean. I seal the gasket to both the lamp, as well as
the squeaky clean roof, and forget about them. They won't leak or burn out
in my lifetime. Once and done.
Just be sure to test for polarity on the wires BEFORE you glue the
lamps in place. It says PERMANENT on the label for a good reason. Just what
I do. Cost? About $100.00 for ten lamps, and maybe $20.00 for the rest of
the sealant, screws and well nuts.

So I just received my marker lights (Grote G5052 and G5053). It’s pouring rain outside right now, so I can’t check this for myself right now, but
- do these lights not fit the existing holes of the old lights? Do the holes and “old screws” not line up? As for wiring, do you just clip the
wires on the old fixtures then splice the new on with but connectors? As best as I can recall, there wasn’t a lot of extra wiring to play with...

The numbers that I provided for you are an exact match for the original
equipment lights. If the ones you ordered don't fit, I fail to see their
value in this application. What you DON'T NEED is any more holes in your
roof. You could fabricate an intermediate plate that you could drill and
tap to fit your new lights, then screw those down to the roof, then screw
the lights to the drilled and tapped holes. Or, you could send those lights
back, and buy the correct ones.

The Grotes are an exact fit replacement. You shouldn’t have to drill any holes.

Yes that is correct unless the bolts have rusted, or Previous Owner has cut them off flush and poked new leaking holes to mount cheep aftermarket ones
with sheet metal screws. Be prepared for the worst and hope for the best.

Oh and don’t pull on the wires much as they can come unplugged from the harness under the headliner and you might have to drop headliner and the
sunvisors are a PITA. Also test wire the lights before crimping or soldering as LEDs are polarity specific. If they don’t work swap wires. One
might be black to black and the next one might be black to white.. An easy 2 hour job that will probably take you a week unless you put in over
time.

Bingo! You must have known my coach’s previous owner. Now I have to fill those 20 incorrect holes with SMC filler, if it ever warms up and stops raining.

Well fellers.. y’all talking about these LEDs reminded me I had a new set for our new EL II so when Mark K came By and asked if I needed
anything.... well I have 10 new Grote markers. Thanks Mark.. just had 3 lights that were cut off at the well nut and and had 2 new poked holes. The
rest used the OEM screws except for 2 rusty ones. Mark used a minimal amount of clear fish tank sillycone to seal. They are BRITE. They are also
different looking from the Peterson’s on our Crestmont. The lower row of LEDs in the housing is more forward than the top row and are arranged in
an arc but is only noticeable up close. Exact same bus light shape as OEMs and Peterson’s. Peterson’s have all forward facing LEDs close to the
front on same plane. The Grote lights had a cut out in the bottom under the gasket big enough to put wires and bucket crimps in and long enough
without cutting any stuff for wires and sits flat. Only 2 had the wire color crossed. I’m sure they will be beautiful behind the new sun visor.
But that’s tomorrow’s plan.

Just a little mention. Any time you use a welnut or a rivnut. Be sure to use anti seize compound! With all those threads engaged, ANY corrosion will cause you problems....A vocabulary improving moment to be sure!
