Does anyone know what grease on the market would be closest to
Caterpillar Desert Gold??

I think Emery mentioned it one time but I can't remember.

It was not Caterpillar that I mentioned. I had said that Bob Drewes said the only grease he would use for everything was John Deere grease TY 6341.

OK. Is there anything commercially available that is comparable to
either of those? it's very pricey buying directly from Caterpillar or
John Deere.

Is Valvoline Syn comparable or ????

Ray,

While I can't promise it is comparable, I can tell you that there is a bearing, known weakness in my mower deck that can kill a bearing (they made a
mistake and it is run at overload continuously) in about 50hrs (one season on my lawns). After the third time I replaced it, I opened up the next one
and packed it with Valvoline SynPower. That was 10 years ago.

I can buy Desert Gold for not much more. I never tried to find the John Deere grease.

Anything with Deere or Cat on it is good stuff but $$$$$$$$$$$
To demonstrate the other polar extreme from Matt's story on what Synpower can do, I had a Lenovo notebook miniature fan squeeling. I opened it up
multiple times and tried different lubricants multiple times. Within a few days it would be squeeling. Finally I put a spec of Synpower on a Qtip and
applied a film to the bearing. It's been at least 7 years and working perfectly. That and I use it on my 236k Jeep front end parts and steers
perfectly. And fixed the upper CV notchiness on my TZE

I did a search on the Forum and when we discussed this back in 2010 "WE" came to the conclusion that Valvoine Synpower and
Caterpillar Desert Gold were pretty much for much.

I have had the upmost resect for our late Bob Drews and know he has depthe
of knowledge as to why the John Deer lub is highly rated.
When I was working for Ford Motor Co, we were encouraged to sell our
dealers the Rotunda Transmission fluid.
My dealers wanted to know why it was superior. The answer from headquarters
was that they had the best Friction Modifier as they worked with some
outside lubrication consultant.
