Grease Gloves

I was getting tired of cleaning all the grease off my hands every night
while working on the front wheel bearings and cv joints. I picked up a
box of 100 vinyl gloves($8) in the paint department at Home Depot the
other night. They're similar to surgical gloves, but don't dissolve
when in contact with petroleum products like latex(as many a prospective
father has discovered).

They work great, especially for taking the outer cv's apart. The grease
wipes off them easily, and, if the phone rings, slip them off and toss
in the trash. They hold up well to mineral spirits(paint thinner), my
favorite solvent, and if they do leak a little bit, it's still easier to
clean up than a whole handful of grease.

BTW, Varsol is a popular solvent among mechanics. But Varsol is a
trademark for one oil company's version of odorless mineral spirits.
You can buy OMS in generic gallon cans at Home Depot for around $4, but,
if you don't mind a slight kerosene odor, buy the paint thinner instead
for around $2 a gallon. One of the nice characteristics of mineral
spirits is that it's only marginally flammable(closed cup flash point of
around 95degF) and is much more safe to work with than more volatile
solvents.
