The Grant removable steering wheel anti theft system has a lockable cap,
which I chose not to use since three out of the three locks jammed at
installation. The detente lock system fits over the steering wheel housing
and prevents access to the steering wheel nut. It is under a plate that is
only removable by using a special Allen type wrench deep down in the
housing. I keep the steering wheel in the house when the GMC is not in use
and in a special hidden storage area when we leave it parked somewhere when
we are on our trips. It's a deterrent, not theft proof. It does not prevent
our GMC from being trashed just for the hell of it. Replacement insurance!
We also live in San Diego, 15 minutes from Mexico so we installed LOJACK on
our vehicles. The Mexican police also have LOJACK locators and retrieve
stolen vehicle. it's the only "authorized system" that can be used to locate
and retrieve stolen vehicles from Mexico without going through the normal
international reporting and delays. All the other stolen vehicles seem to
just disappear over time. Some of the bigger stolen SUV's have turned up as
police vehicles in Mexico. They too confiscate vehicles used to transport
drugs, but it does seem odd to take drugs into Mexico.
I originally chose the removable steering wheel so that I could rotate our
Villa reclining Captain chairs both 90 and 180 degrees for our
reading/dining/TV watching chairs in our 23', eliminating the need for
separate chairs or eating table area. Different post/tables do different
task between the chairs. The Villa chairs [seatbelts attached] are also
mounted on standard Villa forward locking rotating post and have the long
traveling slides so the rotated chairs can be pushed to the dash and our
feet rest above what was the step area. That area is now filled in for foot
rest/storage to use when the chairs are rotated 180 degrees. We did not
have room to store at 26' next to our house so we found another solution to
have a GMC.
