Tell your friend to click on GPS and check the speech preference
settings. Just my guess. Hope it helps.

He may be able to download a new sound driver software from Compaq. This
is a real good company but they always seem to want to do their own thing
which is not always compatible. You want something like a "SoundBlaster
compatible."
