After an effort that stretched into two legislative sessions, SEMA-model legislation to create a vehicle registration classification for street rods and custom vehicles (including kit cars and replicas) and provide for special license plates was signed into law by Governor Rick Perry. Slated to go into effect on September 1, 2011, the new law defines a street rod as an altered vehicle manufactured before 1949 and a custom as an altered vehicle at least 25 years old and manufactured after 1948. The law also allows for the use of non-original materials and creates a titling and registration criterion that assigns these vehicles the same model-year designation as the production vehicle they most closely resemble. In addition, the law only holds street rods, customs and replicas to the equipment standards specified by law during the model year listed on the title and exempts them from the state's emissions inspection program.
 
Watch the bureaucrats require a GMC MH to be chopped & channeled to qualify. :-)

Just drop the bags and you have a low rider. No problem.
Mo. has a good law on Historic Vehicles but the next car I build I think will have a Tx. title. I like this.

I have always wondered how much of a job it would be to section about 3" out
of one at the belt line. Jus' sayin!

Jim,

Gord has teased us somewhat with his plans for "scruffy", his 26 ft coach. I suspect (hope) he plans to reduce the length by up to 6 feet and chop the top or section the coach by up to 12 inches.
That and some late model, exotic power plant and transmission.

As for the antique tags, Tennessee has very clear rules, no modifications. But no inspection -- just owner certified/sworn. Lots of hot rods -- new and old -- with antique tags.

Looks like I'm going to accelerate my Q-bag installation time table. I
reckon with a couple of those monster air pumps that Steve Ferguson told us
about and some big air tanks I can turn Double Trouble into one of those
"Rides" that hops down the road! ;-)

I have 1974 Texas plates on my 1974 GMC-looks cool. Only $15 above normal renewal fee. Bought a brand new set at an antique show for $25.
We can also use historic plates but they are meant for limited use only.
I have been getting mt GMC inspected but only for safety. They do not check it for smog, etc. so don't know if the new law will help us much. Safety inspection is only about $40.

We now have a million plate types to choose from, including a private company that will produce your plate to order-only six digits on mine(for my truck) but at $195/year. Only did that one year. Now we have black/white plates or almost any color, standard plates, standard with 7 digits special order, and on and on.

Hi Dennis, Jim,
Yup! Progress is a bit slow though (typical 'me') as weather this year has been rain or toasting hot and I'm working outside.

The rear is already cut back, I'll say to about a 22 footer (just behind the rear wheels on a 26, then add the rear 'cap' back to that), and indeed - upcoming is the slice through the beltline as that is the most logical spot to do it. Won't be 3 inches though... more like 10! Not for the tall folks but I'm 5'7" and balding so as long as I can walk the length and not whack my head I'll be happy. :lol:
