Golby Fuel tank senders

Some of you might remember that I put my fuel tanks in
a couple of months ago. Thought I should be O.K.
The tanks were in excellent shape, replaced all hoses,
clamps etc. Neither sending units were functioning so
they were replaced with new ones from Golbys.
New GM rubber O rings were used and new GM lock rings.
>
Completed this work almost 2 months ago and when I fueled
up gas was obviously spilling onto the ground from the
top of the rear tank.
>
Today I pulled the offending tank. I found a trail of dust
that clearly showed that the leak was from the sending
unit. When I removed the sending unit it was clear that
the O ring had not sealed, although the O ring was well
centered. These O rings with the tabs to hold them
centered are nice.
>
Had given up finding the problem (I hate that when I
give up and start to put something back together without
finding the source of the problem).
>
During reassembly I found that the sending unit could
shift off center. Compared the new sending unit to the
GM version. The GM version uses a light steel sheet
(about 16 gauge) to seal against the tank. This sheet
has a ring formed that looks like it would be good at
preventing the O ring from shifting. The Golby unit uses
a thicker steel plate (about 12 gauge or 1/8" thick) to
seal against the tank. It has no formed ring. Therefore
the O ring only has the formed depression in the tank
to help it stay centered.
>
No problem with the O ring. It had stayed centered.
The problem was with the sending unit. It didn't have
to stay centered. The formed ring on the GM sending unit
would have not only kept the O ring from shifting,
but would have also served to keep the sending unit
centered.
>
Once the Golby sending unit was installed using special
care to keep it centered. I plugged all the lines and tested
the seal with the tank upside down and some gas in it.
>
No leak!
>
Put the tank back in and filled the tanks as full as possible.
>
No leak!
>
Success at last! It only took me 2 months :)
>
Arch if I remember correctly you used the Golbys sending
units as well. If you haven't found your problem I suggest
you might want to check this out.
>
Anyhow with the fuel tank problem behind me, (before noon ! )
I was able to move onto more mission critical issues like
installing the light in the fridge :). Got to be able to get a beer
after dark without waking my son :) =

>
PS - As a side issue, if the land speed record team needs
a fuel tank re and re man for the pit crew I think should apply.
It doesn't take me long to do this anymore!
>
PPS - Another side issue. I took the drive to gas up today.
Haven't driven the old girl in close to 2 months. I have to make
a point of driving the coach at least once a month. The enjoyment
of using it exceeds any bad feeling I might get when something
does not go as planned the first time.

Gasoline leaks in any vehicle are COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE, imho.

Thats a red light emergency- Find a better solution, just repositioning the
parts is a bad idea. Not much margin to cover any
deterioration/corrosion/deformation/impacts.

The seal should be positvely retained so there is absolutely zero chance it
will be the weak link that causes failure.

Surely we can find a better way to make the Golby sender work than by guess
or by golly. I'd feel awful if a GMC and or GMC owner was lost for a 50 cent
part like a seal. Tech guys, better re-engineer this one!

AMEN! I don't know what you guys paid for those, but whatever it is, chalk
it up to experience and buy the right ones. Please! I've gotten fond of your
posts.

Arch/Gary:
I had the same reaction when I changed out the sending units on my tanks. Only
I was thinking of more than just hitting someone when told by Golby they wouldn't
take back the sending units I'd just purchased from them! Even though the design
is not correct for this application. They told me not to worry, that it would work
just fine! Ha! (to the sound of the cash register...)
My coach currently still has the Golby units on it, and I keep my fingers crossed
that it stays OK for a while, as the Cinnabar units cost quite a bit more than
Golby units.
Must be that critical ring in the seal sheet that makes them so expensive!! ^_~

Anyway, I plan on changing these out when I save up some $$. I just really hate to
pay twice for something! As far as I see it, Golby has lost my business for good,
and I'll return those Golby units sometime when I'm driving by their place. Maybe
they won't be open...won't make any difference to me!!

Guys

Golby people will probably be at GMCI Convention. Maybe they should hear from you in
person. I know that I will be buying from Cinnabar on this item, when I drop my tanks
this winter.

Thanks to everybody for the heads-up. I have noted my cross-referance book.

I hate to disappoint you. However, I've missed two GMCMI conventions since
Myrtle Beach in Mar 1995 and I only recall seeing Golby at the Titusville FL
one, in Mar of 1996.

Odds don't look good!

I was there too, however I did not run into them?? Did they have a vendor

Yes, on vendor row. Came in on Monday, if I remember, complete with cut-aways

Wayne,

Are you sure you're not confusing Caspro with Golby. Chuck Stoddard of
Caspro is the only vendor that I remember with cutaway parts. He drives a
blue and white 23 footer. I was at Marion until Thursday and I gotta' agree
with Paul - if Golby was there it was definitely a "stealth" presence.

Wayne,

No problem - takes a man to admit it! Probably my turn next!

After all the discussion about the Golby Fuel tank senders, I decided
to add my two cents worth.

If any of you are going to the GMCMI convention in Forest City, please
feel free to look us up. We would be more than happy to tell you our
less than happy experience with Mr. Golby. It is too long a story to take
up space here, but we will NEVER do business there again.

I stopped by Golby's while I was in Orlando last week. An interesting
place. Some things were exactly as original - just with the Golby name on
them. OTOH, other parts were not exact but represented as being identical
to the originals. To be "fair" soem of the guys behind the counter seemed
to know their stuff. But a few were order takers in the worst sense of the
phrase.

I hope that the customer service that I saw improves. We may need original
fiberglass parts someday.
