The first customization I ever did to my coach was to install 25 feet of 4/0 aluminum cable, to power my 2000 W inverter, (from the advice of a friend who had experience wiring up those competition car stereos, ha ha!), I should have known better, but this was 20 years ago, and I knew nothing about 12V. (and what a pain in the butt, super stiff cable through the frame rail!).
On my first cross country trip, I thought it would be a cool idea to run the refrigerator off of DC to save propane. Wiring caught fire at both at the alternator/doghouse, and back at the rear batteries. Fortunately it was just a smoking and smoldering, but it was this scenario that prompted me to begin learning about 12V, take matters into my own hands, spend a month rewiring the right way, and soon transform the motorhome into a solar powered studio.
Actually, this little fire
took place exactly 20 years ago, this month! 2019 I am celebrating 20 years of TechNomadic living, and definitely could not have done it without the help of many patient people on this forum. Thank you all!
