Glenn:

You may want to address your question to Dick Paterson in Ontario,
Canada.

Last week at the GMCMI Marion NC Rally, Dick did an engine overhaul
seminar and if I'm not mistaken he talked about the RV cam situation,
saying there is a difference. He even mentioned two cam manufacturer's
he uses, one being Wolverine Cam and I don't remember the other.

He is a GM dealer and has a racing background and current involvement
and should be able to answer. Go to his web site and there is provision
to send him e-mail.

Let us know the response.

Subject: GMC: GMCMH Cam???

I've heard over and over... and again on the latest GMCnet Digest, "the
GMC
does require a RV cam and there are other differences."

I've also repeated this to others, as if it were the truth and I was
all-
knowing. But, now I'm not so sure. I've been told by another very
knowledgable GMC expert that there is NO DIFFERENCE between the cam in a
GMCMH
engine and one in a standard Toronado. He says the part numbers are the
same;
the lobes are the same, and he repeated, THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE! Is he
right?

If the GMC uses a different cam, what is the part number and what makes
it
different? Does anybody really know?

Just wondering,

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

If some one has the Toronado numbers handy, we will soon know, for my GMCMH
parts book says:

All 455 engines = Cam Shaft Assy 400117
1977 403 engines = Cam Shaft Assy 400084
1978 403 engines = Cam Shaft Assy 562299

My feelings are if there is no difference between GMCMH and Toronado cams,
there should have been.

Regardless, when I need a cam I'll get one from the local speed shop
designed for more torque at lower rpms.

I did this years ago with a 1980 Blazer 350 V8. I recall there was a
definite but not great performance increase and a significant fuel mileage
increase.

If a new cam produces 12% more torque at lower rpm's it should be similar to
replacing my 3.07 final drive with a 3.42 drive.

If any one is using a roller cam and/or roller rockers in a GMCMH it would
be interesting to hear of your experience.

Cheers,

Glen

I do happen to have a Olds/Toro book right here

Mine covers 76-81 reprinted 7-87

There is not a cam listed for early 455 but there is a cam listed for
77-80 all with 350R and 403 which is 562299.

For what it is worth the 562299 also fits 76 Olds 350
and 76-78 Olds 260
