GMCI parts interchange problem

All, I am trying to get to the parts interchange on the gmci website. I have registered and logged in, but am unable to get to the parts database. I
am trying to get the correct part numbers for the ignition module and coil for my 76 Royale. If anyone has those numbers I would appreciate it!
I am going to head to O'reilly's tomorrow and pick them up. If they are the solution, at least I will have spares.

Robert,

Just tell them you have a 1976 Toronado.

Ignition coils and pickup coils should be considered a "matched set", that
is, you need to look at the color codes on each part and match the codes
to each other, and to the vehicle/engine family the distributor will be
used in. Failure to use the appropriate color codes may result in poor
starting and misfiring at low speed. The brand names listed are for the
ENGINES, not the CARS--a Chevy-designed engine in a Buick car uses the
Chevrolet color codes, not the Buick color codes. For V-8 engines, there
are three color codes for the pickup coils: Yellow tyrap (early) or
Yellow plastic connector (later) on the wires. Used on Chevrolet;
Cadillac;
and Olds engines in Toronado Blue tyrap (early) or Black plastic
connector (later) on the wires. Used on Buick; and all Olds engines
except those in Toronados. The lead wires are slightly longer than those
used on the "yellow" pickup coil. Clear or NO tyrap (early), Clear or
NO plastic connector (later) on the wires This is identical to the
Blue/Black color code, except the wires are even longer to fit a Pontiac
distributor There are two color codes for the in-cap ignition coils:
Red and Yellow wires Used on vehicles that use the Yellow coded pickup
coil. (CHEVY, Cadilac, Toronado) Red and White wires Used on
vehicles that use the Blue/Black, or Clear pickup coils One of the more
common problems in that HEI is the wires going into the pickup coil right
at the coil itself. (The yellow and green wires). They break inside the
insulation where they go into the coil because that coil is constantly
being rotated slightly by the vacuum advance. The constant bending of those
wire breaks them. I suspect yours has had the biscuit. Remove the
distributor and Replace the pickup coil whether that is the problem or not.
(I suspect it is however) I replaced the pick up coils in vehicles that had
more than 50000 miles since being done as part of a major tune up.
(Distributor removed, cleaned, lubed, weight friction points polished, and
vacuum pot tested for operation).

One other thing to check. Remover distributor cap and rotate the rotor.
The rotor should spring back with no hesitation if it doesn't your
distributor shaft is gunked up and it will need to be disassembled, cleaned
and lubed.

Ignition coils:
ECH IC18
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHIC18
ECH IC19
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHIC19

ECH IC18 has White and Red wires, ECH IC19 has the Yellow and Red wires.

Both coils states for 1976 Toronado

The explanation I have is for polarity. Toronado's have the starter on the
passenger side of engine, where other Olds 455 has the starter on the
drivers side.

What colors do the Toronados and GMCs use? I'm having a little trouble
following all those combinations.

Thanks,
Ron

This was originally written up in an excellent technical presentation by Duane Simmons for a GMCMI convention.
It is posted on the GMCMI site at http://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Ignition-System_simmons_lamey.pdf http://www.gmcmi.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Ignition-System_simmons_lamey.pdf

Look for the section on electrical mismatch problem.
I think his explanation is easier to follow.
