Just a question....but how can you torque the wheel nuts since the holes
have to line up forthe cotter pin??

Patrick,

Your explanation as to one possible reason that an axle nut could loosen
makes sense to me, i.e., if not installed correctly with a space left
between would allow for subsequent slight movement of the bearings and
the resulting looseness of the lug nut.

In my case 2 GMC motorhome mechanics installed the bearings on my
coach-- each working on only one side. (They also installed new
knuckles and lower ball joints .) However one mechanic was much more
experienced than the other. Guess which side developed the loose nut.

I plan to add checking the torque on these nuts from time to time as
part of the preventive maintenace program. Thanks for your reply.

According to the X-7425 book, torque to 110lbft and then tighten to line
up the holes, not to exceed 280lbft. Don't know where I got 140lbft.
Must have confused it with the wheel lug nuts.

IMO, the torque setting is really just to make sure you get it tight
enough. It usually does not take much more to get to the next closest
cotter pin alignment. If you are just past the closest spot and would have
to go a lot more to get to the next, I would also think it would be ok to
back it off that little bit. I think somebody posted the exact method
(from the service manual) on this list a while ago.

manual says to torque them to 140 ft lbs and try and put the cotter key in.
If unable to do so increase torque until cotter pin fits but not to exceed
280 ft lbs.
