Lurker info & intro: Hello, I'm Dave Posey, 56, former full time trucker,
retired Air Force Air Traffic Controller, full time RV person wannabe but
can't convince wife, and now looking for something to bring in enough
income to support GMC addiction, new to PC's since late summer of 99, and
VERY appreciative of this GMC net. In considering what to do first to
reduce heat in the stock engine/tranx/ compartment of my coach without doing
expensive modifications that I've seen discussed here, all synthetics were
chosen as the answer. The engine oil was changed out about 750 miles ago and
though it might be just wishful thinking-seems to me that gas mileage has
improved slightly, oil consumption has decreased slightly and heat coming up
through the floor has diminished too. Of course these perceptions could only
be the influence of a change of season, we will wait and see. Anyway,
because I wanted to change tranny fluids over to synthetics also, I almost
bought into locally advertised machines that suck out the old and push in
the new for around $100 using customer provided fluid, gasket and filter.
This method also wastes a few pints of new fluid in the process according to
the tranny shop guy. I asked another local shop guy that would do it the
old fashioned way and he said $45 and 2 hours, again, customer provides
fluid, gasket, filter. In mulling over these 2 deals I get to thinking
maybe this is on Gene Fishers site and I could be walked thru the process
step by step but after a thorough search, can't find what I need there.
Now to the bottom line of this post: Any advise, comments or suggestions
from my fellow netters on this? Can I do it in my driveway with marginal to
poor mechanical skills? But I have a good attitude and fairly nice winter
weather here in the Golden state. Thanks for your help. Dave, 76PB, CA
