In my case, I've proven that the 403 can overcome a 455 in hill climbing
ability, by going to a 3.42:1 or greater ring and pinion gear.

I think the ideal GMC to buy is an early 1977, if you can find one. They
still had the 455 engine AND the other improvements that were introduced in
'77. I have a late 77 and it has the 403. A friend had the early model and
he had better performance.
