My 10 year old son and I participated in his Cub Scout Pinewood derby on
Saturday. My son's car was built to regulation size and 5 oz. weight
required for the "Scout" division. As a parent, I entered into the Senior
Open Division. My vehicle was a 1/35 scale replica of a 26' GMC (about 9"
long). I chose this scale so that it would be proportioned properly for the
standard pinewood derby wheels and to fit the track. There are no size or
weight restrictions in the "Open" classes. The only restriction was that it
has to fit on the track and only take up one lane The Pinewood GMC weighed
in at 29 oz. The weight of the wood alone was enhanced by boring into the
bottom and inserting a 1" diameter x 2" long steel rod.
The Pinewood GMC easily whipped all of the competition and was a hit with
the kids....who began to chant "RV......RV..... RV" each time it went down
the track. I suspect that this Pinewood GMC holds the land speed record for
pinewood RV's.
