I guess I don't know very much about SOB motorhomes. The only motorhome that
I've ever been in while under way has been a GMC. For close to 20 years the
only motorhome that I had ever even been in was my neighbor's '73 23' Canyon
Lands. Then I drove a few GMC's back in 1998 while searching for the Palm Beach
I have now. I have nothing to compare my GMC with. I like mine a lot, but
wonder about the other ones I see on the road.

So I have a question, is the GMC really still the best riding, handling etc.
available? I find it hard to believe that after all this time, there isn't a new
SOB motorhome in our size range that is just as good or not better. After all,
these things were designed close to 30 years ago. Look at the improvements in
car design during that period of time.

IMHO:
Well then again when I look at mass produced single reciprocating engine powered
light aircraft (from manufacturers like Cessna, Piper & Beech) not much has
really changed in the last 50+ years, except for avionics, paint jobs and
interior trim. About all they did since the 40's was to move from fabric covered
to metal, tail dragger to tricycle landing gear and in some cases added
retractable landing gear to an existing airframe (like our 1979 Cessna 182 Turbo
RG). Those improvements were accomplished years before our motorhomes were
built. So new single engine airplanes from the major airplane manufacturer's
are still for the most part unchanged (except for their electronics) from the
50's. Maybe that's the case with RVs?

Richard,

I think Fred has already hit this one on the head. All SOB's are based on
either truck or bus chasis and will always handle and ride like a truck or
bus. The GMC was designed from the beginning to be a cruising coach. IMO,
size has a lot to do with it too. Comparing a GMC side by side with just
about any other Class A coach still surprises me at just how small these
coaches are. I've never driven a 23 footer, but I hear the difference
between the handling of a 23 and a 26 is almost as great as the difference
between the 26 and a SOB.

Anyway, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it,
Patrick
