That's a terrible loss! A loss for all of us, really.
We're so sorry it happened Dave. Do the authorities offer any hope of of
finding it?

I feel a loss too

I hate that that happened to you Dave! I know it has been an ongoing
project for several years. At least you still have the old laptop for a
partial backup.

Please, Dave, send a copy of the information you have left to someone else
as a backup. There's even online storage facilities for important info
such as this.

But it's only information. Nobody was hurt. Everyone will live over
it. I think I'll backup all my web sites tonight before we leave in the
morning for a 3 day trip. I've already put the laptop in the coach but am
going to go out and get it right now and backup my desktop drive.

You and Jan have a Merry Christmas

Sincerely
Billy and Debbie

I regret to report that my notebook computer with over 4,100 Registry
entries was stolen from my office last night during a breakin.

It was really discouraging to find it missing when I arrived at the
office today and unfortunately the backup disks were in the carry bag
which was also taken.

I have most of the data on my old notebook computer which I haven't
updated since I switched over to the new one in mid October. I would
appreciate it if you all could pass the message that anyone who sent in
info directly or via the web site since October 15th would please resend
the info using the form at www.gmcss.com/registry.htm Thanks!

The Greenbergs wish all of you the very merriest of Christmas holidays!

But, you see, someone WAS hurt -- or at least harmed. Dave was. Those
physical things represented the hours of his life he invested in earning the
wealth to acquire them. That's one of the lies we've had drummed into us
over the years by the utopian socialists who resent the very idea of private
property. That laptop -- not to mention the additional TIME Dave had
invested in loading the data it contained was -- like all his and our
property -- a condensation of that part of his life.
The low life scumbag who stole Dave's laptop violated the "pursuit of
Happiness" of which Mr. Jefferson spoke in the Declaration of Independence.
At the time he wrote those words, they were commonly understood to mean the
unfettered right to acquire, freely use and dispose of PRIVATE property so
long as it did not interfere with the rights of another. In an early draft
of the document, he actually used those words, but chose the ones we read
today in their stead. Too bad...
But think about that the next time you hear that it was ONLY a property
crime.
Sorry for the loss of that portion of your life, Dave. Hope they catch the
scumbag. But don't hold your breath: It was, after all, only a "property"
crime.

Dave, my heart goes out to you. Somehow when a hard drive fries on me, I
can learn to accept it as the price we pay for using cutting edge
technology. When someone steals it, it feels like a part of you is ripped
out. Four years ago, I spent a lot of time setting up two computers for the
kids at the Stamford YMCA where I am Associate Exec. These kids cant even
afford their own calculators. Two weeks after I started giving them lessons,
someone stole both of them. The kids were really hurt and so was I.
Fortunately, last year Citibank donated 12 new systems and Internet access.

Keep up the good work and dont be discouraged. If you need any help and can
think of a way I can assist, let me know.

Dave, my thought go with you. It is dreadful to loose a computer, and one
so valued for its information. Hope you survive the loss.

Hi Dave,

Sorry to hear about your loss. About 15 years ago, someone broke into my
SOB and stole $10K worth of camera gear - and about 15 rolls of exposed film
that I couldn't replace. The police in the small Souf Jawja town caught the
culprit and returned my property within three days!!! So I know how it feel
to have something irreplaceable stolen - but then, maybe you'll be as lucky
as I was. Hope so!

Cheers,

Hi Dave

I have installed a number of CD-R/RW units in the past year. My supplier
prefers the Hewlett Packard models because of their lower return rate. The
8100 series or the newer faster 9100 series are good choices. If you use the
9100 series at full speed (8X) you may need better disks then you get at
Costco. I have a client that does all his backup on his HP CD burner and
Costco Maxell media.

Offsite backup is a GOOD thing! Fires, floods, and thieves are not always
considerate enough to save your backups.

Good luck and I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Maybe I'll go make some
backups now.

Dave

I think the real answer is to be sure it has a USB port. This is the new
standard and all the new peripherals will be USB. For example they make CD
writers that are external and connect to the USB ( Universal Serial Buss).
This will not be easy since this is sort of new in the laptop machines but
I think some of the Sony and the Toshiba machines now offer this.

I like the CD for backup since they cost $1 for the media and they are
archive storage of 600 mb. I back up almost every week on mine since it is
so cheap.

Again I am real sorry this happened, I lost only about half of my web page
once and I was devastated.

good luck

You know how it is.....the police have bigger problems to resolve so I
don't have any hope for recovery. The investigating officer told me it
would be a month before a flyer hits the pawn shops. In Florida anyone
pawning something has to leave a thumb print with the item they are
selling so it may be possible down the road to find the perp but by then
the hard drive will surely be erased!

I would like to thanks all GMC friends who responded to my "Stolen
Computer" report with sympathy and words of encouragement as well as
suggestions on better ways to back up the Registry.

I guess we all learn from the experiences of a few on this Net and this
is another example. I plan to drive back home this weekend to pick up the
old computer and try to fill in the missing data with your help and
cooperation ( and your patience as well!)

Some of you have already begun to replace the info you sent me earlier.
For the record, I don't mind getting all of the data twice as opposed to
not at all, so lurkers and contributors all, please, if you can, use the
form at www.gmcss.com/registry.htm or if you don't have web access check
out the letter I will post, in English and Spanish on the Net, and try to
send as much of that info as you can.

Your efforts are indeed appreciated!
