The ability to search past postings in an invaluable feature of the
Net. I'm not interested in a chat group where there is no record of the
conversations. I'll stay right here.

Heavens to Mergetroid.... NO, NEVER :-)

The ICQ was only suggested as chat alternative to phone conversations which
would usually incur ld charges to some extent.

And just as with a phone conversation... no record to backtrack.

In short, ICQ was suggested as an enhance to GMCnet when realtime
conversations are helpfull and might help to keep chit chat off the mailling
list so that Patrick doesn't get overloaded creating the Digests :-)

I would ecpect that all the meat and potatoe stuff stays as is.

Don't think anything can take away from this net. ICQ is a good place to
discuss other things in real time without the telephone charges. Hey, where
else am I gonna learn how to keep the dang thang running if not for you
guys. Of course, got to get one first. Maybe you guys are making me too
picky on what I am looking for. NOT!

I agree with your observations on the use of the printed word. I will be
here also. This is also the best format for those who would like the info.
but are not willing to participate yet. Darren

No way, Frank. This is where I'll stay. I don't see how we can improve
on something that is working pretty darn well as it is, IMHO. I'd hate
to loose any contributors to this valuable forum.

I think both are fine. there are times that it would be nice to talk in real
time about something specific

I have used http://www.icq.com/ in the past and find that it definitely has
it's place in the world of the internet. I do not think that it will be a
suitable replacement for the GMCNet or related Internet Lists. It is
interesting and is a novelty but the newness will eventually wear off.

I will be right here, monitoring my three (3) lists, GMC, Triumph, and my
Genealogy list.

Larry,
I agree with your comments. The ability to capture the comments and
thoughts seem to far outweigh the online chat. Both have their place,
but thoughts lost can never be recovered.

I agree with Frank,

I have all I can do to keep up with the Net output but surely would never
find the time to get into an interactive mode on a chat line. As it is
when I occasionally go onto AOL to access the Internet, the instant
messenger drives me up the wall. Someone almost always catches me when I
am trying to get to some URL and get off of AOL.

I prefer the GMCnet and will stay with it. I have found the benefit to be
immeasurable and really have no need to get into an interactive
conversation.

I suppose I could be more tactful but it never has been a strong suite.

I also would miss the information
circulated as we have in the past..

Also won't we lose the digest and
