Hi folks! Thought ya'll might get a kick out of this...an excerpt
from an article in the Nov 98 issue of FMCA mag. The article
describes a Chinook concourse Class C race that took place in Aug 98,
in which a Chinook was clocked at 99.776 mph, setting an official
motorhome land speed record.

".....a Chinook racing crew would make two attempts at setting a land
speed record for a motorhome. An unofficial record had been set in
California in the 1970's when a GMC Motorhome was clocked at 97 mph on
a dry lake bed."

I guess the earlier GMC record was not sanctioned by the Southern
California Racing Assoc. (SCRA) at that time, and so was never
considered "official".

What was the record for the GMC? In 1956/57 I turned 96.8 in a Quarter
mile at Santa Ana Drag Strip, in a 46 Ford flat head with a little work
(ACTUALLY A WHOLE LOT OF WORK) by my dad. The 46 was a chopped
channeled and sectioned convertible with a carson top. Painted white and
green and white tuck and roll. It is still alive and well somewhere in
San Berdue. Chuck
