Before you get carried away with pan removal, I would suggest checking &
tightening the pan bolts. They do loosen up & can be major source of oil
leak. Also I think that you will find the effective way to remove the
pan is to remove the engine first. My rear main gave up sometime ago & I
removed & rebuilt the engine (162k miles & still solid performance, but
oil leak bad). When I rebuilt my engine I through away the Rope seal
material & purchased a rear main seal for a Ford 360/390 engine. It is a
split seal like a wheel bearing seal, only split so it can be installed
easier.
That's what I did & now my oil consumption is one quart per 6-8 k miles
w/ mobile 1, 15-50 wt & 40 k miles on engine, 210 k on chassis.

PS: No I don't run that far between oil changes, every 3 - 4 k miles.
