Jim Bounds' Onan Trouble Shooting statement pertaining to non functional
starter motor is what I would do also. If starter motor functions with
battery jumper cable attached to both battery terminals (- terminal to
Onan chassis & + battery terminal to starter's large
terminal.....momentary touch), then the Onan Battery cables (both + & -)
are high suspect. Also the K-1 starter Relay (big one below control
board) is also a suspect.....they are known to go bad.
New replacement starter motors are available from Onan/Cummings under the
P/N 191-1949-03. I don't think you will find in Onan files a cross from
Original Starter motor to this number (Onan files shows original obsolete
w/o cross reference to replacement). This replacement starter motor is
directly applicable to GMC's Onan (4 & 6 KW) with slight mechanical
housing interference (raised boss area). A file will clear the
interference w/o any additional problems. Replacement new starter motor
cost is $205 retail w/o core required.
