A high school friend of mine that's a professional mechanic had one blow
when he hooked up booster cables to it. Remember the "Delco Eyes"? An
opthomologist removed one from his left eye socket(apologies to the
squeemish) - 1/4 inch further to the left and he would have lost that eye.
I drove him home from the hospital.

Ever since then I never stand over or look directly at a battery when making
a connection to it and when using booster cables I always make the last
connection with the negative on the running vehicle at a point away from the
battery(usually an accessory bracket).

Please be concerned, it's a very real hazard.
